SART Question

I have only been as far north on it as the 91. I am planning a Fixie Century on it and the first leg will be from Angel's Stadium to Prado Dam. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/3660644. From there, I plan to ride down to PCH, back to Prado, then return to Angel Stadium, which will give me a little over 100mi.

My question is from looking at the satellite images. It seems that the images are out of date and there are some sections going through construction zones, and some look like rough dirt track. Is the route passable as drawn? Is it fully paved?

I run a "hard fixed" with just a small front "emergency" brake, so I don't ride it on the street much, and certainly not for a century. I don't do a lot of hills with it either. I have a geared road bike for that.

I'm not sure about parking at Angel Stadium (is that the train station? I presume you're riding the train in?) but if you drive, Rampart (just south of there) is a nice parking area and quiet.

As for the top of lower Sart, check out your map at mile 16.3 where you turn left... right about mile 16 is where people park when they want to start at Green River and ride to the beach and back and that's where I'd turn around if I were you. If you want to continue on to upper SART so you're not doing laps then PM volosong, he does a SART century every now and again and he'll have a good route for you. I sort of assume you want to stay off city street with your fixie, maybe I'm wrong.

I have no idea what the road looks like where you turn left on Green River but people who continue to upper SART don't go that way. (they turn right at mile 16.3, not left)

I have been to the area after mile 16.6 (I went about a mile in). It is definitely dirt. It basically goes around the golf course, so I wasn't sure if it was legal and decided to turn around. I am not sure if it is all dirt though. Crossing the railroad is technically illegal, but it is a good way to get into Chino Hills SP.

Thanks for the responses. TH, yeah, taking the train to the stadium. Now I see that leaving the path at green river road will take you into Corona. I'll probably take that to just past the trailer park to turn around.

If you want to add some miles, the beach end of SART curls around and there are some bathrooms & water fountains (I've filled up there many times, I seem to have survived) and you can head NW on the beach bike path towards Huntington Beach & Bolsa Chica for something different. It's usually congested in the summer, should be OK in the fall. PCH has a big huge shoulder going both ways there too. Keep in mind the prevailing wind is from the west and usually picks up mid-morning or later.

Here's my SART century, almost exactly what you propose. I start a few miles north of the stadium since that is where I live. It's all paved, water at various spots.

Going past the golf course at the north end is not what you want to. The paved trail ends, and you have to go through private property to get to the dirt trail. There's no clean way to get to Prado, so just turn around at the paved end of the SART. You can see what I did to hit the 100 miles you want.

I did a fixed gear century starting at Yorba Linda Regional Park and heading up Green River, over the 91 and out to Tom's Farms area (Temescal Canyon). It was quite do-able on my 42 x 15. Yes, there is some climbing but (for me) that makes it a lot more interesting that the flat part of SART; which is most of it, really.

Yep, and I had to give necro-kudos to that ride. I did a timed 20k once and just missed averaging 20mph. You did over 20 for 100mi?!?. I'm shooting for a sub 7hr. I'm old and fat, but it's all good

TH, thanks for the water info. I know of one water stop, Moon Park, and I see several other parks along the route that I'll investigate by satellite.

Unfortunately, I know Toms Farms. Wife drags me there to shop for house cluttering knickknacks. Also, that may be just a bit too hilly for my fat arse pushing a 48/15. I did do the Bike the Bay on my fixed. The Coronado bridge wasn't too bad (48/16 for that one).

Oh also, the water you want to shoot for is at Yorba Park...best water on the SART and the fountains are the least likely to be bum bidets. During my century all 3 of my water stops were there. Delicious! Fill up your two bottles each time you go by the park and you'll be a happy camper.

Agree about using it, disagree about the deliciousness of it. Bring some nuun or gatorade powder or something and all will be well.

If you get fussy there's a subway and a gas station convenience store at the Tustin overpass and you can go buy water that doesn't taste like it's wound it's way down the state from Northern California through hundreds of miles of desert and bird poop.

There's also a gas station etc at Green River where you can get supplies - and several places on the north end of the trail where you can jump off and find a 7-11 or similar spot without much effort. Bathroom stops are also spaced out along the route - port-a-potties.

That community toothbrush is probably in good shape, considering the dozen or so users only have a full set of teeth between them.

Well? How'd it go? (might be still going this early!)

I hit SART this morning between Yorba Park and the Big A with the family but I didn't notice any suave, hip looking dudes on a fixie.

Didn't go yet. I'm planning it for Black Friday. Shaking the cobwebs of the fixie on the local path tomorrow. Planning 20-30.
