Crossing the border at San Luis RC?

I'll be visiting the Yuma area over the holidays, and I've got this idea in my head that it might be fun/interesting to ride down across the border and around San Luis Rio Colorado for a bit just on a daytrip.

Am I a fool? Practical advice welcome on anything from safety (I'd be on a fairly nice bike this time and by myself) to road/traffic conditions to border hassles. (Haven't bicycled back across into the USA since about 2005.) Thanks.
