Trek T200 - 1 1/4 Stem Options
Now that I have a few mile on the tandem - I need to work on the fit.
The current stem is VERY long...and I need to find something shorter.
(on 3 of my other 90's bikes I've used the $15ish 1" to 1 1/8" adapters and have a large collection of
I've discovered this Trek has the "odd" sized 1 1/4 fork and stem...I've done some searching, but having a hard time finding what I need.
It looks like Tandems East has a Quill to Ahead Conversion Stem (1 1/4 threaded to 1 1/8 unthreaded) for $
Is this my only option?
Thank you!

Yup, that's the only option I have ever been able to identify.
It is the Nitto converter and very nicely made, which dulls the pain a little.
Possible you could find a shorter 1 1/4 quill stem 2nd hand but unlikely it would be a front-loading type. Advantage of the Nitto adaptor is you use a threadless stem and simply remove the front cap for transporting the bike. And there is a very wide range of threadless stems available, often inexpensive too.
Good luck, post updates.

I see you have already completed your upgrade but thought I would share a recent development for others who are researching this issue.
Last week Mrs WPH, Baby 2 and I were in Brisbane and I borrowed my friend Roq's T100. This was a flat-bar bike he bought new in 1994, still in pretty fair and nearly entirely original condition. Roq wanted to convert this bike to drop bars - I was able to supply bars, 7sp bar-ends and DiaCompe brake levers plus some cables and bar tape for the job. The original stem would have been too long and too tall, so Roq simply ground the extension off another old 1&1/4 inch stem he had up his cardigan.* We were able to bolt standard 1&1/8 inch stems to the stump of the quill perfectly well. In the end we used a 90mm road stem which fit the 26.0 mm bars bang on.
My brother TRH (also on BF) and I took the renovated machine out on the Saturday AM for a fast River Loop, even getting over the rollers in St Lucia on the BCR (54T!) with our other brother PNH and a couple of his mates. The bike rode much like my T200 but the tires on Roq's machine were a fair bit heavier (more comfortable though). The 7sp worked very well for changes but the new chain slipped on the old cassette. I am not very fit at the moment but ran out of legs before I ran out of lungs. Fantastic ride and great fun working with Roq, PNH and TRH on the fettling of the T100.
Carry on

ps - USD39 is a very good price for the Nitto adapter.
* This size quill stem was used by a few bike manufacturers including Apollo in Australia, Trek and Gary Fisher in the US and Santana (who list their stem size as 1.25 inches, which may be different from 1&1/4 inch, I am not sure).
