Is it just me or did they move the date of this ride from last year? I thought it was like 2-3 weeks after Cotton Patch! Anyways, I'm debating on heading out to this ride this weekend. If there are a few people going to meet up with I'll probably go, but after the CPC ride I'm tired of doing long rides semi-solo.

I ran this ride last year on normal tubes and Michelin Pro 2 Race tires w/o any flats. The first few miles the chipseal can be a bit rough and could cause a flat if you're tires are not properly inflated. DMF - what distance are you planning on going?

If it was me I'd do the long route, but I'll likely have to talk my brother into the 44. Otoh, if his bike isn't up to it I may end up doing it alone. Won't know until I see it Friday.

DMF - how's Sat looking for you?

We spent all Friday working on the bike. About 1970 vintage with (apparently) no maintenance in that time save for tires. But it had been ridden relatively little and the bearings were dry but not torn up. At the last we decided that the rear wheel was too bad to ride - four broken spokes after we were done with the hub - and the backup wheel (off a Schwinn Continental) was nearly as bad - none broken but several rusty. I managed to convince him to rent a ride at Richardson Bike Mart. Nice 63cm Trek 1600 for $25/day. (You might have thought it was $250/day the traction it took to get the card out of his wallet.) By the time we were committed it was too late for coordination.

It was the reddest sunrise I've ever seen. We set out on the 54/44 mi route and Mark cut off on the 28 mi route as it left the 54/44, so he got in about 35 mi. I did the rest of the 54 at speed. The Leonard Hills weren't much, save the last one which was kinda steep at the end. Definitely a flat ride.

I was wearing my yellow/black Arrogant Bastid* Ale jersey (looks like the Mad Duck jersey from a distance) and carrying a camera and bag, so you might have noticed me. What route did you do?

And what part of town are you in?

DMF, I got very bad sleep the night before the ride, almost went back to bed after getting up Saturday morning, but instead decided to go ride with the Plano Bicycle Association for their Distance Builder ride, which after a missed turn or two ended up being 52mi. Lucky for me it ended when it did because I was out of water, out of energy, and ready to call it a day. As far as my location, I'm about 2 blocks from Richardson Bikemart (Richardson location).

That RBM is huge! There must be a lot of bike buyers up there. Mark's daughter goes to Pearce right around the corner but we're down at Fitzhugh and Central.

Sounds like you might have had the better ride. Did some hill work last night at WRL, but it doesn't look like I'll get to ride tonight and the weekend is iffy, too...

I plan to ride the Sunday Recovery Ride with PBA Sunday morning (8am I believe, need to double check the website). Hope you might be able to make it.

Did the Sat. PBA 8 o'clock ride. "18-20 mph average" my ass! They dropped me at 26 mph. Got off the back on a hill and couldn't get back on for the wind. At least I got 20 mi. of riding. (Can't say it was a real friendly bunch either. No one even spoke to me during the time I was with the peleton.)

The Recovery Ride would likely have been perfect, but my Sunday was booked. Back home now.

I think I may know who you were. I did the 8:00am Saturday ride ( a rarity for me ). I was the guy who was trying to get my bike together..remember I pulled over and told you to tell them to just keep going. I also asked you what was hanging off the back of my saddle. I had on a yellow Livestrong kit. Was that you? I remember sorting out my seat bag and getting back to you, then swinging over to try and get you a draft back to the pack. It was on the hill just after the Bethany light. You made it back to the pack at that point. I think we lost you on the run down Exchange?!?

Our average was 19.3mph for the ride, just as advertised. In order to get that kind of average in stop and go, they have to have sustained surges that go well over the advertised rate.

Sorry no one said anything. I see lots of new faces and rarely if ever will I say anything to someone. I've never been one to go right up to anyone and say anything for no reason.

Sorry bout the chilly reception on the 8am PBA ride there DMF. I didn't ride Saturday, but the DB group @ 7:30 would have probably been a better group for ya. I rode the 8am "Do-Rag" ride my first ride with PBA when Ravenmore came up to Dallas. I had meant to get with the DB's, and the 8am certainly do take off like a bat out of hell when they get rolling. I think that ride I barely clung on for dear life with an average of 19... with my 25lb friction shifting vintage!!

I wasn't in trouble at that point. I was hanging back to stay in contact with you. 'Preciate the tow, though.

I was off the back going over US-75. Was that Exchange? I'm a notoriously slow starter on morning rides but I probably could have gotten back on at that point. It would have been costly with the wind picking up and I didn't want to get dropped 30 mi out and lost instead of 10 with a fair idea of how to get back. So I turned around.

Now that I think about it, there were quite a few waits at lights, and that long wait for the crash. Factor those out and the average would have been about 24, I figure. Maybe higher?

You seemed friendly enough; not everyone is a gladhander. And I myself am usually less laconic.

IMO it's not the responsibility of anyone but the ride leader. Greeting aside, on a 60 mile ride the leader either negotiates the drop policy or provides the noob with a map. Failing that I probably shouldn't have started. Oh well. Next time I'll know.


Btw, when did y'all start pacelining? I was looking forward to some practice.

The 8:00 ride is led by Rusty. He typically has a 'drop' policy if you can't ride in the advertised mph range. He's a bit rough around the edges as he used to be the one who typically would get dropped and left for dead.

The 8:00 pacelining is sketchy at best. The best paceliners I've ridden with are the OAS rides but they're a bit faster. I've also heard some of the other slower rides are getting in some good paceline practice. If you're just learning it would be better to ride with a slower group so you're not riding near your limit while figuring out the paceline.

Check out the OAS Lite ride. It's fast but not as fast as the 8:00 group. We do paceline quite a bit when we have the right folks participating. Our average last Saturday was 19.2 MPH for 51 miles. I've ridden with the 8:00 gang as well as the OAS group. I seem to keep coming back to the OAS Lite ride though. I don't think we have ever left anyone out in the middle of nowhere to find their way back. As Doggus stated, the best pacelines are done in the OAS group but you must be able to sustain speeds of 25MPH+ for long periods at a time. They take off pretty tamed out of the parking lot but once you hit the open roads you BETTER be ready.

Come try to the OAS Lite ride. I won't be there this weekend but I should be there next weekend. I'm easy to spot (Check out the You And Your Ride thread)
