Tiagra question

Folks i'm going to order my new touring frameset next week sometime.
now i had on my wishlist from (chainreaction ) the Tiagra 10 speed sti shifters along with 11 to 32 cassette and medium cage 105 rear mech. but it just dawned on me those shifters wont work with the new Stronglight triple crankset .

so plan B should i stick with Tigra sti 10 speed sti go for stronglight compact 50x34 crankset and maybe 11 to 34 on back..

(at this time money is tight so can't got for 105 or ultegra )
Thanks folks ,

Anto.

If you are looking at the 5800 105 read derailleur, it wont play well with the 10speed shifters and cassette.
Not sure which level of 105 you are referring to.

Is the Stronglight Impact the crank you want? If so, thats just a 110/74 bcd triple and the rings work on 9 or 10sp setups.

no triple in the 5700 as far as i can make out besides the tiagra in that bit cheaper.

i really want everything to run as smooth as silk even with a mix and match.
on my last touring bike i had xtm771 worked great but no barell adjuster on rear mech

I've never had a problem running different cranksets than the spec of my derailleurs and shifters. As long as the speed matches (9-speed crank with 9-speed chain and derailleurs, etc), it shouldn't be an issue. Front derailleurs are much easier to fudge than rear derailleurs - they can almost always be tuned to work fine, regardless of crank or ring ratios. In my experience.

If your rear derailleur and shifters are 10-speed, and the Stronglight crank is 10-speed, the front derailleur should have no trouble with it.

Have you purchased any of these components yet, which would sort of set the trajectory?

If not, there are some things you could consider. Sugino makes a nice triple crank that can be set up with a 48 or 46/36/26 or 24 chainrings. (Edit: after checking, the Stronglight is about the same) I think this would give you a nice set up, especially teamed with an 11-34 rear cassette.

The Microshift 9 speed shifters/brake levers would work sell with this combination. If you can find a set of 4503 Tiagra shifters, they are also really durable and an excellent touring component. The Shimano Tiagra 4503 front derailleur is probably the best STI FD for touring. It is tough, works very well, and offers a wider range of adjustment than 105 or Ultegra. However, it only works well, if there is a 12 tooth difference between the large and middle chainrings, e.g., 48/36.

In my experience the rear derailleur has been a lot less fussy to adjust than the FD. However, my experience is limited to 9 spd or less.

You mentioned the tiagra STI wont work with the stronglight crank. What is the reason they wont work?

Its a triple crank and triple STI shifters...looks good from what i know about each product.

Don't know about you, but 34-34 is not nearly low enough for me for loaded touring. 34-40 is even pushing it. If your lowest on the rear is 34, then you'll be better off with a smaller chainring.

I don't think any STI road brifters will work well with V brakes. Have you considered bar end shifters and V brake specific levers? Tektro and Cane Creek have them. If you run a triple crank, you need a triple rear derailleur. If you want to use a 32 or 34 cassette, a 9 speed Shimano mtb rear derailleur would be a good choice.

That's not correct.

The 5800 (new 105's) discontinued support for the triple, but the older 105's (5700 still has a triple).

See Shimano 105 5703 Triple 10sp Braze On Front Mech | Chain Reaction Cycles

Note the 5800 is 11 speed and the 5700 10 speed.

If you want everything to work smoothly, then I'd stick with the one groupset. If you order from the UK you can get an entire 5700 groupset (brakes, FD, RD, crankset, chain etc.) for $350 so why skimp?

I don't see why the Tiagra/105 triples wouldn't work with your Stronglight Crankset. Does your crankset have pins and shift gates?

But, as others suggested, why not go for a full 4703 (Tiagra) or 5703 (105) Groupset?

Bikes: Lots

I built 2 touring bikes last year. I used 10sp Shimano 5703 cranksets, front triple derraileurs and Deorge 9sp rear derailleurs so that I could install large rear cassette. I changed the 30T front chainring to 26T for about $15.00. Now I can run 26/39/50 front chainrings and up to 36T rear cassette. Shifting has been flawless on both bikes for over a year.

Be careful with the newer Tiagra triple cranksets, the smallest chainring does not use the old standard 74mm chainring bolt circle so you can't install smaller chainrings than the 30T it comes with. The 105 5703 has the 74mm so you can install down to a 24T.

A couple of cautions if you buy a complete group. You mentioned you have V brakes so the road calipers you get with the group will be surplus. Also, you still need to resolve this issue of road brake levers and V brakes. Cantilever brakes might be an option.

Yes. Forgot to mention that.

Also what Clifford Says is important. Get a long cage RD so it accepts 32t rear cog, otherwise your stuck with a max.of 28.

Mini-v-brakes work great with STI Levers. No issues using them on our touring bikes.
If you went to use regular v-brakes with STI lever just use a travel agent.

Bikes: A bunch of old bikes and a few new ones

I like brifters a lot but on a touring bike, I'd go with bar ends. There's a lot to be said for friction on the left when shifting a triple esp. when mixing components.

Worth considering, IMO. I was never completely happy with the Sugino XD crank and Ultegra brifters, especially with a smaller inner ring. Bar ends work just fine with it.
