nitto technomic alternative?

Are there any quill stems that are as long as the technomic but cost less then $50?

Bikes: 85 Specialized Expedition, 07 Motobecane Immortal Spirit built up with Dura ace and Mavic Ksyriums, '85 Bianchi Track Bike, '90 Fisher Procaliber, '96 Landshark TwinDirt Shark Tandem, '88 Curtlo

They only cost about $50 anyway. $56 on Peter Whites website, saw them for less on ebay.

You can find a Nitto Technomic for less than $50 if you shop around on line. Another option is the Profile H2O, which isn't as pretty but is more convenient because it has a removable face cap. I've got a black H2O in 90-degree rise with an 11 cm extension, if you're interested. With the rise and long quill, it will raise your handlebars about 5" above the headset (at least).

I've also got a silver Nitto UI-2 quill stem with removeable face-cap, 90 degree x 10 cm. It won't raise your handlebars as much as the H2O or Technomic but will raise more than most stems. Send me a PM if interested in either stem.

kalloy. 35 bucks or less.

they make one with a long stem part... I found this photo, but its a UK supplier. I think you could find them cheaper in the US. I know they make different lengths (reach) too.

The Nitto is not expensive enough that you should scrimp for a few bucks less. It's a beautifully-made, high-quality stem in the traditional sense (get the Deluxe model), unlike any of the other mentioned alternatives. I've had one for years. I also started out with one of the cheapie, welded uprising monstrosities with the front opening. The latter look proper on similarly ugly "modern" frames, but they make a more traditional, more classic road bike look like trash. I don't see how the convenience of a pop-off front means anything. It's not hard to reinstall a brake lever and retape, and assuming you have a good idea about what stem extension you want, it's not like you have to repeat this operation often. You will wear out and replace a great many taping jobs long before that stem needs to be replaced, if ever.

I would get it from a politics-free dealer, personally.

So you don't actually have an alternative then?

What is a politics-free dealer?

I like Rivendell. I was referring to another website which shall remain nameless but which was linked to in a previous post. Sorry if the reference was obtuse. Not important anyway.

If you have the kind of bike that can use a Nitto Technomic, and you need it for handlebar height, there really are very few practical, affordable alternatives. It will go higher than almost any of the removable front-plate welded aluminum stems.
