I deleted my post because I had clicked on the wrong thread, Quicksdraw.

My touring bike is currently in France, and won't get here before the weather gets better, so I foresee myself doing a short tour on my fixed gear. Should be fun, but I would probably get a lower gear ratio than you, currently at 42/16 and was thinking of going even lower. Definitely need to work on my packing list to get the load as light as possible.

Hi Twerney,
Thanks. I use Arkel GT-54's on the back and I just changed to Ortleib Sport-Packer Plus on the front this year. I used Arkels on the front until things started to get wet despite the rain covers.

Does anybody know if these bike saddles are any good? I've been looking around, but I'm new at this sort of thing?

Setting up a light touring setup on my old steel roadbike. Just made the panniers/bags. Gonna need a lighter sleeping bag, a taillight for the rack, swap back on the original saddle, and a few other things. Gonna have a shakedown weekend trip on it as soon as the weather warms up a bit.

Yep, you might look around for a lighter bag...

I made them from cotton canvas/cotton duck fabric.
Thanks to all! I will eventually be picking up a Motobecane Fantom Cross Outlaw to use as a touring/commuter bike. Until then, I'm making do with my ill-adapted roadbike. Not going to sink good money into touring equipment until I have a satisfactory bike.

Just realized I hadn't posted any pics of my trucker. Here are 3 from our tour around Lake Ontario last summer.

Parked while at lunch in upstate New York east of Rochester

On the Wolfe Island ferry en route to Kingston. Wife was riding my old bike, towing the BOB trailer. Hers are the pink Crocs...

Chillin' on the way out of 'the County'. Inside someone's drive shed in Hillier, Ontario.
Great tour. Proving that us Clydesdales can tour!

Onelescar--nice photos and neat trip but I gotta mention this, in a few of the shots you appear to be in the large chain ring and the larger gears at the back--bad habit, its hard on the derailleur (see it being pulled forward to the front of the bike?--Kansas+Missouri) and not great for the chain either. Might want to keep it in mind, it aint too mechanically sympathetic to your drivetrain.
