The route I would take would generally be to the north and east.

Stay off the interstate, pick lightly traveled roads.

Bikes: Aegis Aro Svelte, Surly LHT, Cannondal R3000 tandem, Santana Triplet.

ACA routes: Underground Railroad route (https://www.adventurecycling.org/rout...ndrailroad.cfm) to either the TransAm Route (https://www.adventurecycling.org/routes/transamerica.cfm) then east on it to the Atlantic Coast route (https://www.adventurecycling.org/rout...anticcoast.cfm), Or the Underground Railroad route to the Northern Teir route (https://www.adventurecycling.org/routes/northerntier.cfm) to the Atlantic Coast route.

ACA has all the maps (for a price) and they are very logistically informative. They'd get you close. The Northern teir would probably be the most direct.

Glad I could help...have a great trip! I'll most likely be on the TransAm (east to west) hopefully this summer, but more than likely in 2012.
