I like them fine. That said, I'm finding that I lace up the spd shoes less and less. Yesterday and Sunday, it was Teva sandals on the flat side of the pedals, and it felt great. If I had to do it again, I'd probably go with MKS, like the ones on my fixie. Not being clipped in is less hassle and more comfortable to me.

My road bike (Spec. Allez Steel) has MKS Sylvan Touring pedals. My commuter bike (Schwinn Sierra) has Giant MTB platforms. I used to have clipless pedals on the road bike, but find I am just as efficient with the touring pedals and comfortable shoes or sandals. The SPD pedals stay on the shelf nowadays.

I used flat, and then moved to bike pedals with studs on one side, spd on the other, and I now ride (virtually) always with clipped shoes. I made the change for efficiency, which has improved my riding speeds. I was able to eliminate all knee pain with slight adjustments to the angle of the clips on my shoes. For me, it made sense and improves my riding enjoyment. I have used Powergrips, and they were good, but the stiffness of dedicated riding shoes and consistent placement really made a difference.

I too have switched to metal BMX pedals over the past year. I like them quite well, but find that the pins are sure digging holes in my Tevas. I'd hate to lose their "grippiness", but I also don't want to wear out my shoes this fast. Is there a BMX pedal that isn't so hard on shoes?

After switching to clipless I'll never go back... But the touring bike I'm setting up now has the flip/flop Shimano pedals. Platform on one side & SPD on the other. Just in case I want/need to ride around where ever I end up each day. My feet start to hurt at about 10 miles if I'm not wearing the hard sole SPD shoes. So that's part of the reason.

When I only had one bike I used combo pedals - spd/platform, liked them just fine. But then I started my bike collection, and now when I want to wear regular shoes I just ride a bike with platforms :-D
