Please recommend a rack

Hello,

I have been wanting to get into bicycle touring for a while now and I just bought a used Jamis Coda Elite. I am now trying to find a front rack that would mount to the three mounting points that are on the bike. It fender mounts near the dropouts as well as a hole where a caliper brake would mount if it didn't have disc brakes. So, I'm thinking a rack like this makes the most sense for me:

Would this style rack, with only 3 points of contact, be stable enough with 20 lb loads?

If so, could you recommend a good rack that fits this style?

I found the Velo Orange Constructeur Front Rack, but it says specifically that it wont fit a disc-brake bike.

Would I be able to solve this problem with something like Jandd disc brake adapters?

They look pretty basic. Do you think that I could just grab some kind of spacer from the hardware store and do this (making sure to prevent any metal on metal contact.)

If you can point me in the direction of a good rack that will fit my needs under $100 please let me know.

An understandable dilemma. Disc brakes, no rack mounting holes on fork, $100 budget.

First, consider ways other than a front rack to carry your stuff.

Second, get the Jandd disc adapter. It definitely allows the rack stay to be bent out beyond the caliper. You might be able to cobble something together from the hardware store, but this adapter does it without compromising load bearing capability.

Third, rack fitting is always a crap shoot so one often has to try different brands until you can settle on the best one for your purposes. So buying from a source where returns are easy is important. Mounting at the caliper hole is not so common, so there might not be someone here who can make a confident recommendation.

I'm afraid that your $100 budget will be consumed quite rapidly. If you can relax this constraint a little, call Wayne at the Touring Store. He may have some suggestions.

Cyclesafe, Thanks for the advice. I would be willing to go over if necessary.

I also wonder if anyone has experience with the velo orange rack I posted above. It is the closest thing I can find to what I imagine will be most convenient and stable.

I don't mean to hi-jack this thread but if the OP isn't interested in your Tara rack I am interested in buying it.

Thanks, but I've got a carbon fork, so I'm avoiding clamps.

I am not a fan of touring bikes trying to use racks on carbon forks at all.

better to leave the front with a handlebar bag , use any fork tip eyelets for mudguards.

2 modest sized rear panniers, a stuff sack for gear on the back rack top.

and leave a lot of kit at home.

Or, as in your picture chosen,
Buy a steel fork with the mid fork braze-ons and then a Low Rider type rack will be fine.

A balanced load in panniers on low rider racks steadies the steering significantly.

You could always get a Nitto M12 front rack. You can't attach panniers to it, but it would hold a front bag.

My girlfriend's! She's a bit more expensive than a hundred though.
