I also saw one of those Trek IGH bikes languishing 2+ years at the LBS. I had a good look one day. It was burgandy color, had a straight bar, rubber belt, 8 spd, hybrid medium slope TT, twist shifter with stupid 2 finger levers. MEC did this goof also. It just felt like a dorky bike with the weight all behind the BB. Not much different from Breezers. Putting IGHs on bikes that don't look oldfashioned is a mistake IMO, at least from sales viewpoint.

I have time to kill and often go watch at busy commuter routes which get funnelled by the river and bridges. I would guess the following.

Trail bikes / Walmart = 66% all dRs
CF Race bikes = 8% all dRs
New "10" speeds/ hybrids / tour bikes dR = 5.5%
Old 10 speeds = 4%
Old 3 spd IGH = 1.5%
Fixies 5%
All age SS = 4%
Hybrid IGH 8s = 3%
Others -- SA5s and new 3 spds and dR cruisers = 3%

The LBS that sells 90% of the IGH bikes here does sell hundreds of them. Pashleys, Linus, some Opus, new brands like Simcoe. They also sell Motobecane, Spot, Surly, Rocky Mountain.

As for the efficency discussed earlier, pure anecdote of course ..... I got a very rare treat Thursday night after dark. I was riding my Rohloff heavyweight past the downtown at 16 mph to a Lotto store when this for sure Cat 1 fixie chick girl passed me. She was cruising at 25 mph. Holy molly I need a 92 GI to go that fast. We stopped at a light and then I chased her at 23.7 mph a couple blocks. ha. Then she ran the next yellow light and disappeared in the darkness. Darn, and I didn't ask if she was on a track team. I see lots of guys on CF bikes going 27 mph.
