Howdy, Utilitarians. I suppose this bike belongs here far more than anywhere else at this point, so here it is.

It's not perfect: When the panniers get full, the front end gets very light, causing a "wheelie-y" feel when starting out, and mild head shake being inducible when on the road*. I have a feeling that this due to nearly all the weight hanging off behind the rear axle.
Not bad for nearly no budget and being based on an old semi-racing-style bike, though.
* This was much, much worse when I was using an ancient Pletscher rack. Even when empty, the tail wagged the dog like crazy.

I finally built up my ultra nice grocery getter: Soma Buena Vista Mixte with Nuvinci rear hub. I'm still working with the saddle and handle bar height, but I built it for everyday around town use. The details are on my blog.

The good looking guy is my friend... we hosted a winter ride and weenie roast a few weeks ago and hauled everything in the valley by bike.
Figure the extra bike had 70 pounds of gear on it and in the panniers and my friend had his bags stuffed and also brought in some bins of wood from about a mile up the trail.
The meat got put in a snow freezer and we had enough to feed a small army.
And those lawn chairs came in handy... got to catch some rays after we got set up.

(Chili is the not so secret ingredient).
It was more like European drinking chocolate as I used a full pound of cocoa and nearly 2 pounds of sugar with most of that milk and it was smooth. creamy, and a bit of a chocolate rush.
It was nicer riding out than it was riding in as I lost at least 40 pounds of weight.

I made 3 gallons of real "loco" cocoa over an open fire for all out guests... maybe you can see the chili next to the mustard.

A weenie roast without adult beverages?

My friend's winter / utility / trailer towing all wheel drive Batavus... just swapped out the SRAM 3 speed for a SA 5 speed with a drum brake.
Nothing like being able to spin the bike out in fifth gear and pace cars...

My commuter and grocery getter. I love this bike. The front basket was weighted down by a heavy backpack and 3 grocery bags; it usually isn't tilted down so much.

I'm thinking about giving it a proper basket, drop bars, fenders and a new bottom bracket.
