Fatbike Build

I've got the bug to build a fatbike. I've been looking at popular builds in various places online and I'm seeing prices in the range of $2000-3000. Is this just the unavoidable cost of the niche fatbike market, or is there a good way to drop the build price down to the $1000-1500 range?

If you build it yourself, you might be able to. Off-the-shelf, probably not.

My suggestion: Get a 9:Zero:7 135mm offset frame for $600, Pugsley fork for $120, some 80mm rims (either Fat Shebas or choppersus.com rims) for about $200, and use generic MTB parts for everything else. Even then, you're still looking at $1500.

Or, scrounge ebay for a used Pugsley.

(EDIT) Ah, found out you can get a Pugsley frame & fork for $575, not bad... didn't know that. That cuts another $150 or so.

Requires a 170mm rear hub, which negates the cost difference.

there is an after market adapter for the Mukluk to allow use of the 135mm offset rear wheel

IIRC around $45, so 450 for the frame, fork and 45 for the adapter still in the ballpark

Correct, I forgot about the adapter. If you got a 170mm frame and used an adapter, you could use any fatbike wheelset out there. I don't like the adapter, but that's my opinion. It would be an option.

I see them online for $45-$60 depending on shipping. Might be what the OP was looking for!

I agree, it's not an elegant solution but a lot of people are upgrading their wheelsets and there are quite a few used 135mm offset wheelsets for sale..

I'm wrestling with the idea to get the muk/adaptor and a cheap pair of offset wheels for this winter and save up and then get a nice 170mm set built up for next year

decisions, decisions

just looked, yep they are 60 for the adapter

The 9Zero7 frames are just about sold out, they didn't make a whole lot this year and they sold like hotcakes! The old closeout Mukluk framesets are a good bargain as well, but those stupid 170mm hubs are so expensive. There's been a few good deals on used Pugsleys/Mukluks on MTBR and ebay. There might be more once the Moonlander becomes available in a few weeks, I know a few people are waiting to switch.

With that said...I'll have an offset Pugsley wheelset for sale in the next week or two (Large Marges, XT rear/Surly front hubs)....
