Crankset help!!
hey guys...
i have got a new frame that is apparently a very limited addition, it is a relaunched GT pulse track frame, im in the process of building it up... and the biggest problem im having and have heard of is finding cranks that will fit to this frame (especially the 'large' size frame, which i have) the first crank i thought of is truvativ omnium crankset...the problem is that the crank SPIDER hits the chain stay and i cant seem to find any crankset that will fit this frame....it is a BB86.
i heard that FSA has brought out a bb386, but is that only specific to FSA cranks? or does anyone out there know of a crank that will fit my frame?!
any help is much appreciated!!

Any shimano road cranks will fit this frame; the trick is, you'll need to use a compatible bb86 bottom bracket.
(here's one) https://www.competitivecyclist.com/pr...6758.19.1.html
You'll also need to figure out your chainline, as you'll likely run a road double.. FWIW, FSA does make a compatible BB and cranks; sram also makes a bb86-standard BB which will fit only SRAM cranksets. The Omnium is possibly the only track-specific crank that can be used in a BB86 frame, as of right now....

I should qualify that by saying any contemporary, hollowtechII shimano road cranks will fit. Shimano made the BB86/bb92 stuff to compete with bb30 and address some ppl's concerns re: external BBs. The idea is, you take the same oversized bearings, but press them INSIDe the frame, rather than let em hang out, exposed. The 86 is equivalent to a 68mm shell with outboard hollowtechII bb. The 92 corresponds to the 73mm setup found on their MTB cranks. the spindle length and diameter is the same. I was happy when i heard this, b/c it means we can put new BB86 cranks into "old style" frames with euro BBs so long as hollowtechII external BBs are available.
but, to answer your question: no, I've never tried it. I will put off buying a bb86 pressfit frame for as long as i possibly can.

ps- have you found any cranks that differentiate between being hollowtechII and bb86 on the market yet?

We have bikes in our shop with BB86 bottom brackets equipped with current Hollowtech II cranksets such as 105, Ultegra, etc., and some with FSA cranks. The crankset's spindle diameter has to be 24mm in diameter, which is what Hollowtech II cranks have.
Here are a couple of pics of a Shimano BB86 bottom bracket unit (actually, after looking at the pics, these pics are of a similar Shimano BB91 bb). These new press-in Shimano bb's are quite similar to the new PressFit 30 bottom bracket in that the bearings are pressed in, but are encased in a shell. The difference With Shimano's BB86 is that it's designed for a 24mm diameter spindle, while PressFit 30 is designed for a 30mm diameter spindle (i.e, BB30 cranksets will work with PressFit 30). Also, the bb shell width for BB86 is 86mm, while PressFit 30, like BB30, uses a 68mm shell width.
