Wuzzup with Mavic? It looks like the R3 caliper is currently being manufactured; do they make any other parts? I see that they were bought by Salomon in 1994, but after that they seem to (except for rims and wheels) have disappeared from the components market (well, the brakes are obviously still around.) Is the R3 caliper really manufactured by Mavic?

And...see the attached picture. The lovely curve of the lever, like the leg of a, well, a French girl. Okay, a French girl with a big foot. I have only the left lever, does anyone know where I can get the right? Anyone have such a lever in their junk box, just waiting for a trade? Or maybe a pair...yo, a complete pair? She is lonely, my lovely French amputee girl leg bike lever...

The Mavic brakes were produced by Modolo, I don't think Mavic ever
produced their own brakes. Baron did stock them either as Mavic or
with Modolo Branding.
Check the Renaissance Cycles web site, also I'd check ebay since Baron
has been very active there. I'm not sure about sendng him an email,
I sent two about a month ago and still haven't heard anything back.

No dought that is a petty that Mavic does no produce more parts than they do today. I have a bottom bracket cartridge and set of cranks from Mavic, bought back in 1990.

I'm not sure that Luker's levers are Modolo. I have a set of NOS Mavic 451 brakes, which came as a set with levers that I'm almost positive predate the above. The 451 is the Dia Compe BRS 500, as seen at https://www.peterwhitecycles.com/imag...Cbrs500cal.jpg. The levers I have are almost definitely a matching Dia Compe set -- they need a special domed ferrule inside the lever, or the housing pokes through the body.

I've definitely seen the levers above on Ebay recently -- they're sharp looking. If I come across a lonely right, I'll let you know.

You are exactly right about the calipers. I have a pair on the bike that I'm currently trying to complete. They seem to be very nice...everything that turns has a detente so that you have little indexed brake adjusters, etc. They don't say anything but Mavic on 'em, and the price is pretty steep on ebay (~$50 or so). I think I have the matching Mavic levers for these brakes, although this picture, from about 1992, shows those calipers with the sexy french lady's leg brake levers (this is a mavic neutral support "Yellow" bike, a cannondale). I'm not sure if the lever had a matching caliper, or they may have been sold individually.

The black brakes are the R3's. They are currently in production, and retail at about $190, for just the calipers. Does anyone know who makes these?

Uh oh now I'm confused. The neutral support bike sporting those levers has the Modolo Master SLK style calipers (whose number designation I don't know). I thought those predated the 451's, but now I'm not sure. Any idea?

Mavic stuff looks great, but their naming scheme sucks.

What I called the R3 above is the new Mavic Master SSC.

Is this picture the brake called the SLK? It too is a cool looking part. Does anyone know when they were made and who made 'em?

This lever, it is pretty dang swank. If has an internal spring mechanism, it has a fulcrum and pivot inside that looks to take up additional cable; the cable exits from the back top of the lever, under the hood, so that the cable is not pinched by the body of the brake; the end of the cable itself comes out underneath the lever, making cable swaps a cinch. A lot more thought went into its design than any other levers that I have seen.

My favorite new lever that I have just recently tried is the Campy carbon fiber one. It is really light, pretty comfortable; but it is just a brifter without its inner workings. This lever is way cooler...

That's indeed the Mavic version of the Modolo Master SLK/Mach style brake. The Cannondale is sporting them. Here's a picture of the Mach 1 -- the similarities are pretty obvious. You can see pics of the SLK at https://www.yellowjersey.org/MOSLK90.JPG

I'm actually working on an page with each of the Mavic brakes, and their original maker analog. Should be done shortly.

I do not know the chronology of these parts. The SLK's were on the Cannondale slightly prior to 1992 (the year of publication of the book that the picture came from).

yeah, these are the levers that are currently on the bike that I'm working on. Had to find some stepped ferrules that would not let the cables pull through...I'm still not sure that I've got it quite right. Silver levers, pretty plain, with MAVIC down the front.

not nearly as cool as the french amputee lady leg brake levers, btw...

Late 80"s. Modolo manufactuer. ADR were one pro team that used them. My father has a pair in pristine condition. I know where the matching levers are, but they are stuffed!

The rebranded Dia-Compe are later (early 90"s, check out pics of ONCE from '92, '93.)

Definitely not as cool.

You can get the proper ferrule from QBP still, I believe. If your LBS can't/won't order it, Yellow Jersey has them.

Not that anyone was waiting to know, but for future searchability sake, the Modolo SLK style Mavic brake is the 440. Circa 1990/91.
