'73 Sports Tourer FD
Well, thanks to everyone here on C&V's advice, I've got the Sports Tourer almost ready to roll. Cleaning of parts, re-painting and new decals are complete, and it now has wider bars, a Sugino triple crank from Noah Scape, and SunTour indexed stem shifters from pastorbob --- thanks guys!
Now the LBS mechanic is telling me I will need a different FD to accomodate the 48-38-28 triple, and that it needs to be a vintage 8-speed (or less) Triple capable FD, due to the chain width for my 5-speed freewheel being wider. Or something like that...
Anyone know what different brands/models of FD will work? My downtube clamp size is 1-1/8 inch, and according to the Harris site, the cable routing from the lower stop on the downtube is unique, neither being a "bottom" nor "top" pull.
Thanks,
John

I have a Shimano Titleist you are welcome to for postage. It is of the same era. I am not sure if it will do a triple. If some else confirms it will, PM me your info.

I've had good luck with the Suntour Compe-V. It has the necessary cable stop that you're going to need and works well with triples. It is reverse throw (meaning you have to pull cable to move it to a smaller ring). On a couple of applications, I have had to file a little bit off where the limit screw touches; very easily done on these particular derailleurs.

What about just using a clamp on cable guide on the downtube so you can use any bottom pull derailleur of your choice?
I used a Campag. cable guide when I put a Campag. Record front der. on my '66 Super Sport(which is shifting across a Stronglight 99 triple).

Noah,
So, I take it the Suntour Compe V you've had the success with was with the same or similiar "unique" cable routing to my ST? What is a fair price for one of these on the net?
Sierra, are you talking about a regular, Campy record FD? The ones that are about $190? And, is the FD shifting setup on your '66 SS the same as on my ST?

For a bike with old school over-the-bottom bracket gear cable routing, one does not necessarily need a front derailleur with a cable housing stop. On Capo #1, I simply routed a piece of housing from the downtube-mounted cable stop under the BB shell, leaving the other end loose. Since the housing is acting merely as a guide and not as a compression agent, it works like a champ.

Yes, my front der setup is(was) just like yours. I am referring to the Record fd from the early to mid seventies...Nouvo Record era(the front der. was not called Nouvo Record, it was simply Record). I have bought several of them on ebay anywhere from $15-$25. I wanted to make my SS something of a "Baby Paramount". That's why I chose that derailleur. I used the Campag. downtube cable guide with it as was done on the Paramounts of that time.
