42 miles in the western suburbs, including a 26 mile club ride (very fun and fast!) and 8 miles there and back. This month I'm staying in a suburb rather than living in my house in the city (long story), so I tried a Monday ride that I've never done. Looked at a map to figure out how to get to the ride and saw that I could get there mostly on trails, not realizing that one of them was not paved, but I got to the ride on time anyway. It was a large spirited group and we played KOM/QOM, sprinting up the dinky hills that are typical of this area. When it came time for some heady sprinting and pulling, I kept thinking that we'd leave a bunch of them behind, but most everybody kept up. Average speed for the group ride was 21 MPH. Average for the whole ride was 19.3 MPH - riding to and from on that unpaved trail kind of slowed me down.

Yes! 38 miles at a 15 MPH pace with the Tuesday group, which tends to be a fast group. There are some pretty good climbs towards the end of the ride, and one terrific descent. The last three mile stretch, before the pace slackens and the group and heads for coffee, always has a sprint that the fast boys and girls do. I did it today, the second time ever, and I was THIRD. I surprised a lot of people, one of which was me! I've been in a spiraling funk as of late, since my crash, really, and today's ride my have pushed me over that hump. It felt like it did!

A ride like that and I'm high for 3 days.

This morning's commute was exceptionally blissful. As the sun was coming up, there was not a cloud in the sky, low humidity, and temperature in the low 50s. The air quality must be especially good right now, because everything took on a crystal clear appearance. To a person, every other rider I passed either nodded, waved or gave some other greeting (that is a rare event). While I was able to see lots of flood damage, I was just thinking about how thankful my family and loved ones came out of the recent storms in fine shape.

23 miles, mostly errand run but added some local bike lanes to take a peek thru the Garden of the Gods, then home the "not straight way", LOL, really nice day, 80's instead of 90+, lite breeze and SUNNY! Just a real nice day to get what needs to get done, via a "bicycle"!

10 miles on the doubletrack levee road on the Tenn-Tom Waterway in the heat of the day, 97 degrees. Didn't see any wildlife today, animals are smarter than humans. Looking forward to 20 on Friday in the early morning.

Started the day with a 40 minute TRX workout routine. Rode for 3 hours at a casual zone 3, 90 rpm pace. Went kayaking for a couple of hours with my daughter. I am in need of a couch. First though, my turn to cook dinner..

Tuesday 46.5 miles and Wednesday 46.5 miles. I seldom do the same ride two days running, but I managed to do it today.

17.5 wednesday evening. still over 100 degrees every day; the heat will just not let up. maybe next week; i will still ride but some days the heat just sucks the energy out. still better than not riding.

32 solo miles Thursday afternoon. For various reasons, I can't do my regular hill climbing rides any more, so I made a half-hearted effort at doing 2 minute intervals instead. 2 minutes in a tough gear at an effort level hard enough to hurt. Ran into some problems b/c my route wasn't ideal for the intervals - it's not so bad when you do a little climbing during an interval, but it kind of defeats the purpose if you crest the hill and start descending. Also, one was interrupted by a stop sign that I should have remembered but didn't. Anyway, I'll give myself a B+.

Changes in schedule and reduced daylight mean that I'm not maintaining the ~250 miles/week that I was sustaining over the summer. It's more like 180 now, with some weeks much less. I haven't yet felt an associated decrease in performance, but it's inevitable, particularly as I'll have 8 days off the bike for travel starting on Sunday. My riding ability now is the best it's ever been, and I'm sad to know it's going to start slipping away.

did my park ride after work. Only 15 miles, but I make sure they count by pushing it as soon as get into the park. The best thing is it is a continuous loop where you never have to stop, and there is at least a small hill.

Great weather today for a change and the boss let us out two hours early for the long weekend. My wife was off today, so we went to our wilderness park and did 16 miles. I was shooting for 32 but she got tired after the first lap and we decided to call it quits. Three more work free days to ride. Oh Yeah!!!

I rode all over town today on a personal one-man Critical Mass ride. I waved, 'tinga-linged' my bell and generally spread a lot of two-wheeled, good will.
GO, bikes!
