Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I do like the chauffeur idea, but I think they call them gondoliers.

I've gondola'd a canoe plenty of times while camping, most notably when checking on a friend that had capsized. He didn't appreciate the smartassness.

So, it's okay for the gondolier to ruin his back while standing up in a small boat...

Warning: Cycling related content:

I was riding last night (on the Cinelli, no less), when a passing driver slams on the brakes and shouts out my name. Lo and behold, it is a friend from the former group ride, and he asks if I'd like company. So after a minor detour, I have company.

He had asked me some time back if I had ever considered doing the GAP & canal ride from Washington to Pitt, and I had told him then that I would be interested if he ever got around to it. He is getting around to it, and is planning it for September. I am now cordially invited, and graciously accepted.

So I plan to ride the SS from DC to Pitt in mid September. Woohoo!

Apparently!

Three things to remember. First, he is getting paid for it. Second, he may be wearing a back brace. In board shorts you can't get away with that. And third, better him than me.

I put my 700x30 kenda kwests on the singlespeed last night and not only do they fit, but I could easily get larger tires on there. That bike is going to make a great winter/gravel bike. It's only drawback is it only has water bottle bosses on the downtube.

I know very little about either SS or winter/gravel, but in my limited experience low gears are very helpful on slippery surfaces. Is SS really the best choice for a winter/gravel/bike?

...doesn't that ride follow the towpath for part of the way? If so, what's your max theoretical tyre size on the SS?

Yeah, here it is. Fat up your tyres before you go, would be wise, I think.

Yep, I run 25's now, and I have to see how fat I can fit in there.

The plan described to me was as follows: Drive to Pitt (where 1 rider lives), rent van to drive to Wash, turn in van, ride the whole way back, find hotels to sleep.

But being me, and the fact that the rider who lives in Pitt is in his first year of riding and has never ridden more than 60 miles in a day, I submitted a proposal as follows:
Ride from Pitt, every morning I drive a car 80 miles ahead, leave the car, and ride back to meet them. It means I would turn a 330 mile trip into much more than that, but I think I will be probably 50% faster than a new guy. Leaving from Pitt should give us tailwind, and lets the first 150 miles be limestone instead of dirt. Dirt in the rain can be demoralizing if weather doesn't cooperate. It also lets us carry all of our gear in the SAG vehicle, and if anyone wants a rest day, they can take the vehicle. And if we need to bail, we can.

Insulated water bottle is less problematic for cold weather than even an insulated Camelbak. Water in the bite valve freezes and makes the whole arrangement useless.

Interestingly, this is much more of a problem on the bike than tromping around on snow shoes.

I just put the C&O on my bucket list a couple of days ago. Trying to decide between boxing up a bike and just CLing a bike in DC, prepping it in a Motel, then rolling out on it.

Why not just recruit a SAG driver/porter? I would do it for expenses, but that would have to include air fare.
