Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Thanks! I like having new toys - looking at them longingly before work, etc.

Thought I would post a few pics of my present bikes. The first is a Tsunami compact that I bought on ebay. Pics 2, 3, and 4 are of the same frame after stripping, smoothing out the welds, painting, and building up. Unfortunately, you can't really make out the sparkle of the pearlescent orange paint in the pics. The fifth and sixth pics are of my Mondonico 70th Anniversary...with most of the parts taken from the re-done Tsunami. I have to say......refinishing the Tsunami was a lot of fun. I did all the stripping / body work myself....but had it professionally painted. The Mondonico definitely rides better!!

Sorry for the bad picture quality.

From what I can see, a really nice job cleaning up the welds! Automatically moves it up in class!

Here's my new Trek Pilot 5.2, Project One custom paint and full Ultegra:

The personalized script says "Live for Mom". My Mother died a year ago this month. We were very close. She was my best friend. One of the last things she said to me was "No matter what...I live". She was only 62 and she very much wanted to live. Because she couldn't, it's now up to me to live for her. That's how I see it. So, in the process of taking care of myself and getting in shape I fell in love with cycling (again). After putting many miles on my fitness bike, it was time to upgrade to a road bike. I thought it best that I buy a bike for the rider that I aspire to be. So, with my colorful new Pilot and Mom as inspiration, I think I've got it covered.

Thank you both. Very kind of you. Actually tomorrow is my Mom's birthday. I think that would normally be a tough day for me, but the weather here is unseasonably warm and sunny this weekend (60's in November!). Instead of sitting around being sad on Mom's birthday, I'm planning a nice long ride instead.

Possibly blasphemy coming up - this is my first bike build (including wheel lacing):
Eno hub fixed gear/single speed conversion of a '02 Cannondale R3000si.
She's not exactly complete yet, new tires are on the way ...
I know this isn't the FG/SS forum, but I thought you guys might like it anyway

Very inspirational. Love the colors too. Were did you get it painted if you don't mind me asking? Certainly a nice bike too.

My Ride

I keep my on this forum too much not to upload a picture of my bike. This was my first build and it has an assortment of cheap e-bay parts that only I could love. But, I like riding it when I get the chance and it's definitely more bike than I need as of right now.

Anyways, I've got a couple of small upgrades (white bar tape, Ritchey WCS stem that should fit me a little better, and a long needed seat upgrade to an Arione (my original seat was $5 or so ), so I thought I'd upload a few pics of my bike in its original state.

ps. And yes, those are some classic Shimano 600 brakes that don't match anything else on my bike. I don't think I've seen any on this forum, but shoot, they stop my bike well enough for me.

Thanks. The paint job was done by Trek Project One. It's a great way to customize any new Trek bike. I went to my Trek dealer and test rode a Pilot 5.2 in my size. Once I was sold on the bike, I picked the theme and each individual color. That part is done online. Then you print out your final creation specs, take them to your local Trek dealer and they order the bike. The Project One department at Trek in Wisconsin will paint the frame according to your specs and ship the bike to your local dealer to be built. The whole process took less than 2 weeks. I actually had more fun buying this bike than any car I've ever purchased.

Here's my new bike.....I still have to adjust the seat and handlebars, but the shifting and brakes were good right out of the box. Still need to pick up a decent computer, 2 water bottle cages and a small seat pack, but she's basically ready to go. It's a LOT faster than my Trek 7300, which (with its new fenders, rack and a light kit) is my official bad weather/commuter bike.

(Now I just have to get matching pedals, cages and kit to go completely OCP).

I use those brakes. They're the sweet aero kind! Like an aero brake really helps on my steel bike.
