Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Thanks for the info slimvela. I spent my fair share of time in Horno. Deployed with 1/1, 1/4, and a reserve unit from Michigan who did their workups there, 1/24. Nice finish on the Fuji BTW. Semper Fi

As for the fixed-gear bikes; it only proves that some of you are doing it for the image and will take any chance they can get to show off their rig and receive peer approval. That said, it's an extremely fun thing to try/do and I recommend it to everyone, but not as an image/trendy-tool. Do what you like to do

Everyone at some point likes show off, there's nothing wrong with that, we're all guilty of it. But Min, you've been around long enough to know you were posting in the incorrect thread.

Why can't you just buy new bar tape/tires/cables and install/post and update post in the Fixed-Gear Picture Thread like everyone else?

Now, I DO have a white garage. Hell I have two, and a brown one. But I won't do that. And no.. there is no photoshopping in the following images.

I finished it last night. It's 18lbs. It's also my first build. Ever. :-) Now I just need to find me some brifters, as i'm not liking the barcons so much. And as usual, click the pictures for big.

A road-geometry frame which happens to have a fixed gear drivetrain is still a road bike, particularly if they are ridden on centuries.

Let me know how those tires hold up. I was thinking of snagging some up. I have heard mixed things about them...

^^The tires are decent, but they are really hard to put on your wheels.

are those hutchinson top speeds?
I had a pair. could NOT get them on Mavic MA-2 or Wolber superchampion gentleman GTA wheelsets.
tried with levers, a park shop tire tool, and finally took them to the LBS, who also said no-go.
I sent them back and got Conti GP4ks instead. no problem at all there.

So what sort of pneumatic press did you use to mount those?

I've gotten motorcycle tires on with only hand tools ;-) I can do anything! I ended up using a flat blade screwdriver to do it. it worked out ok. I really like the wheels, I'll be buying another set I think.

You just don't get it do you?

THERE IS A WHOLE FORUM FOR FIXED-GEAR/SINGLESPEED BICYCLES! The FG/SS forum of for bikes of single speeds ridden on the road. We also have a Track Racing subforum for those who fall into that category (just so you know).

Briar -= I think the point here is that a fixed gear or singlespeed bike can be used as a road bike (and many people do this) whereas a geared road bike is not a single speed or a fixed gear.

I got an invite to do a road metric tomorrow and my biggest problem is whether I crush souls on my vintage fixed gear road bike or on my vintage geared road bike.

There's an uppity fellow who just dropped some serious coin on a Cervelo and my friend said we need to inspire him a little... he will be riding fixed tomorrow as his geared bike is still languishing at the LBS

Take a lesson from the Anime you seem to love so much and grow a little. While this forum might be a little to granualar, and it may seem tempting to scream "go back to X forum" it's not productive, nor is it called for in this case. A road bike can be fixed gear. It can be single speed. It can be a mini-velo. It can be flat bar.

Now pack away that ego, and enjoy the bikes.

I've posted this before, but this is my single speed road bike - I've ridden it on metric centuries. Converted it from an old 1984 Schwinn Super Sport frame.

19.5 lbs as she sits. Campy Record headset, FSA Pro Track chainring, Cinelli Alter stem, Xero XR-1 wheels.

That bike is beautiful. I like how the frame almost disappears with all the fancy gear hanging off of it. I am a little suprised at the weight though.

Go post it in the "Fixed-gear/Singlespeed" forum, made for road fixed-gears/singlespeeds.

I realize your bicycle fits both criteria, but bikeforums has been nice enough to cater to FG/SS riders and provide them with their own bicycles; so use them.

Yes you are (in this case, not necessarily in general). Give it a rest. How many speeds must a bike have to be considered a 'road bike'? The FGSS forum is a very different atmosphere to the Road forum. Not all SS or fixed gear bikes belong over there. Now, if the (lovely) above bike had an Aerospoke on the front and some cards in the back spokes, I would be standing with you on this one.

You are annoyed because a single speed or fixed gear bicycle does not conform to what your idea of a road bike should be and I would bet you sifted through all the posts in this thread the fixed gear and singlespeed bikes aren't going to have spoke cards or aerospokes but be more traditional in design save for their lack of more than one speed.

How would you feel about a road bike with a 3 speed internal hub ?
