Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New road rider here, I have a question

Hello, I have been lurking these forums for a while on a search for the perfect bike for me.

I bought a 2007 trek 1500 discovery channel team edition with 105 9 speed all around (paid $850 if your wondering), look pedals (some italian brand, I forget the name) and some snazzy specialized comp road shoes and of course the discovery team jersey and shorts (should I say defunct?)

When I bought the bike, the LBS explained to me how to shift up and down through the gears. I got a proper fit that feels great, and the owner of the business went outside and ran around while I road the bike to make sure I looked good on the bike as far as fit goes and really took his time to get me used to the cleats. I was an informed customer, and I think that had a lot with the service and treatment I got from the shop and that was thanks to this forum... THANK YOU ALL!!!!

OK, here is my question.....
When shifting, the gears change crystal clear, but today on a ride I realized that the right shifter can actually keep clicking past the point that I usually push when going down a gear. These are the type of shifters with the brake integrated. When I kept pushing the shifter I go down multiple gears which is nice when you find yourself going up hill and didn't realize it I suppose, but I had no idea it did that!

What exactly are the 105 shifters supposed to do when I click them all the way back? Is this normal? I feel like I don't know all the features of my shifters now.... Is there an instruction manual for these things? I know it seems like a chimp can do it, but I just like to do things the correct way.

Thanks again!

I feel you, when I got on the bike after a ten year lay-off, I had no clue on how to shift these new-fangled gears. I was also too proud to admit this.

Here is a link that explains the how to, a lot better than I can.

Thanks! So, when I click the shifter all the way over ( I think three clicks) it is normal to change more than one gear? The instructions at that sight didn't mention that.

PS Been a while since I rode I used to just move the lever until the bike stopped clicking and my legs stopped burning.

Yep, it's normal, and a damned fine feature at that! If you ride certain Campy groupsets, you can do this for both up AND downshifts.

Unless you are riding '07 or newer Centaur or lower. Somone mentioned on here that the feature may also be departing from the 08 Chorus and Record as well. Buy up all of the NOS you can find and then sell it back to the Campy fans in a year.

Really! I hadn't heard about Chorus and Record losing this feature. Hmph! Hope it isn't true, otherwise I'll be sticking with 2004 Veloce for a while to come.

Apparently it makes for better shifting - shorter lever travel distance and such.

But to the OP - yes. completely normal.

Saw this thread and it seemed applicable to problems I noticed this weekend...I also just got a new bike with the new Tiagra shifters on them. Went for two rides this past weekend and a lot of time I felt like I couldn't get get the chain to stay in a gear very well. I occasionally heard it make sounds like it was dropping a gear and heard a decent amount of clicking as if it wasn't completely in a gear sometimes. My bike is a cannondale caad9 5, brand new '08, so I'm a bit concerned but being new to this it could very easily be user error.

You will get used to the shifters in no time. I too bought a 2007 Trek 1500 and had never used the STI shifters before. After a few rides you will get used to the shifting. I had to get used to them as well. They even have half click adjustments so if your in the small chain ring and smallest cog you can adjust the shifting with a half click so that you won't cross chain. I love my 1500.

I hate to say this but you're still cross-chaining. The condition is the chain position, not the noise. Trim shifts minimize the noise, but the chain is still crossed over. You really should avoid the big cog/big ring and small cog small ring positions if possible. Your drivechain will thank you by lasting longer between chain/cassette changes etc.

You're going to alter your behavior based on a comment from someone in BF??
No way is Campy going to make the Chorus, Record shifting like the lower sets, multi-shifting defines the expensive sets.

I thought weight defined it too?

My bike comes with full 105, not tiagra....

That said, maybe you are cross chaining (big gear in front, big gear in back = clicking and bad for your gears.) Try taking your bike back for an adjustment if you are not cross chaining. Tiagra's are supposed to be lower level than 105's, but give me a break.... At the level of cycling me and you are at, I doubt we could tell the difference. I mentioned the clicking to the bike shop on my test ride, and they showed my how to trim to help the clicking, but told me to avoid it nonetheless.

I am getting used to them now, since you have the 07 1500 as well... 2 questions. Is your bike full 105, or do you have some ultegra parts thrown in? I paid $850 last month, and it is all 105.

Also, what are your feelings on the seat? I lasted about 20 minutes on it before I threw on a gel saddle cover.

Yes mine is full 105. As for the seat, it is allright, but I am shopping for a new saddle for Christmas. I average 35-50 mile rides on the weekends and have done as many as 70 and sometimes I feel a little sore. Proper fit and tweaking the saddle height helped allot. I am just looking for a better saddle that is not too outragous in price. I have been looking at several at the Bike shop, one I can't think of the name, but the other one is a Selle San Marco. For now the Bontrager saddle is okay, but I am sure there is better. I don't know if I would go with a gel pad cover, I would look for a different saddle if your not comfortable. I think the saddle covers would add some bulk and weight to the seat. In the long run, it is what ever makes your bottom comfortable in the saddle. I have seen all kinds, my friend rides an old Brooks leather saddle. Love the bike though, its a good entry level bike, You got yours for 850, thats a good deal, mine ran 1099.
