Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

And taxidermy chick has got flabby, squishy veal legs. WTF is up with all these supposed cyclists horny for her? She's clearly never turned a pedal in her life, not even with an auto-pilot, spin-class, 12-pound flywheel moving her legs around. More to life than cleavage, horndogs.

Edit: Tom must be doing all his miles on the same flywheel as Noobia, judging from his puny quads and herky-jerky, Parkinson's-afflicted, newbie-triathlete spin form. More quality and less quantity might help your tragic HTFU factor, noob.

Seat looks way too far forward meaning he has had to raise the stem miles in the air and the angle of seat is horrific!! as are the bars.

If he had focussed on good form and fit with quality training, he could be really good with that amount of enthusiasm. Unfortunately he looks like an untrained slow as hell noob and has serious issues.

I reckon anyone who considers themselves even remotely into cycling could ride him off their wheel

I was mostly surprised how bad the show was at convincing me that Dyvia had an actual problem. To me it looked like she was just really into her hobby. She seemed to take reasonable safety precautions. I'll bet that her actions aren't actually meaningfully unsafe, and that if there were any safety problems they'd probably be treatable, at which time she could reevaluate her hobby. While the show mentioned interpersonal problems, it never really mentioned any actual problems with her job or anything. The psychologist seemed to be grasping for straws and didn't even really tell her to stop.

Her friends seemed like such pansies.

But yeah cycling dude is wack. What kind of bike was he riding around anyways? The beam running to the saddle thing looked sort of unique.

He's sharper than most and holds quite a number of cycling records that relate to distance.

Tom Seabourne - PHD - Exercise Science

Try riding him off your back wheel after you have been in the saddle for 24 hours.

Looks like that at one time he could have kicked most people's asses too but the effects of his unrelenting cycling have probably impacted this...

He should read his own work on the subject of injury prevention.

About his bike with the softride seatpost and stem jacked up, it's probably the only way he can ride comfortably for so long. He has degenerative arthritis in his hips, and as the doctor on the show said, it's as bad as he's ever seen. Perhaps if he were pain free, he'd ride a more road-oriented looking bike.

The doctor never actually said that cycling had caused his problem, he said it was arthritis.

Also the spin portrayed in the show was that Tom didn't want to get the surgery because it meant not being able to ride for the several month required for the recovery from the surgery.

Reality TV is still just entertainment. Unfortunately I admit I find it entertaining.

It's hard to say whether his osteoarthritis was caused by cycling, but it certainly is making it worse. The constant movement of his hip joints is just causing further damage and is at least speeding up the degenerative process from osteoarthritis. And as the surgeon mentioned, these things do not get better over time.

In a follow up Tom said some of the pain issues had been mediated by physical therapy but it is known that anyone who rides as much as he does will experience issues with walking as the muscles used for walking and cycling are different.

The man who set the record for most miles in a year (75,000 miles) had great issues after spending 365 days in the saddle and had to learn how to walk after this feat was accomplished.

I agree that the arthritis may have been independent of the cycling and this did not seem to be causing him as many issues as most which is probably due to the time he was in the saddle as it is is not the same level of load bearing exercise as walking, running, or lifting.

I suffer from issues that stem from axial loading issues because of a lower back injury and can ride forever as it is a nearly pain free exercise but walking is very difficult... but I also do this to make sure that my strength is as balanced as it can be.

So he will likely require hip replacement surgery in the near future just to keep walking or ridding.

I hadn't thought about how the two activities involve using the muscles differently. With so much time spent cycling, maybe he just doesn't walk very much, particularly if it causes him pain.

Hopefully the guy will get his problems sorted out.

Correct. There's really no other effective treatment for such severe joint degeneration.

Has it been a while for you? Raise your standards. Any non-cyclist can wear a push-up bra and dense layer of face-paint in the name of advancing her fashion-designing career. Go back and watch the video again.... really?

Well, I did go back and look at her just now. You're right, she is kind of rough. I guess I should have said that I thought she was hot ...for a person who's into taxidermy. This, coming from a vegetarian, is already a significant stretch. So no, not that great.
