I've sorta found my bike and interest in using it. So I have no power, leg speed, stamina, or form but I seem to be turning the corner to being a fair weather cyclist. I'm sure it will all come back eventually. Tonight while staving off not so dry heaves the sickness compounded into thinking how long it's been since I just casually rolled a few miles at 28 with the ability to jump hard for a light or whatever if needed. On top of that I'm missing some really stellar group rides to go feel unwell by myself.

Another "hard" group ride today. Not 100% from illness still, but I finally was able to get a good night's sleep last night. Seriously helped me to feel better. Group ride was fun, set a new 10s lifetime power max. Also lead out the sprint for one of the segments we always go for.
CTL and ATL are back on the rise again after a week of kinda floundering CTL at 102, ATL at 97. TSB is still positive, but on it's way back down. Weeknight crit tomorrow should be fun.

It's part of an (Army?) grant, featuring Lyme detection in a lateral flow assay format featuring custom nanoparticle markers. The idea is to be able to quickly screen a field for Lyme before sending troops in. That's probably as much as I can say about it without getting in trouble
Nor do I know much about it as I'm not on the lateral flow/bio side, and more of an inorganic materials characterization guy.

That's cool! I work in clinical immunology labs so that's why I'm interested in lyme testing. I'm working on a small research project now looking at the prevalence of lyme, erlichia, rickettsia, and anaplasma in north carolina. I use/test clinical specimens though, nothing environmental.
Over the past few years we've gotten pretty deeply involved into lateral flow and have gained some deep bioconjugation knowledge through hiring some experts. It's really neat stuff. I make sure the NP's going into the assays are what we say they are and then it's out of my hands .
Back on Topic: Riding into work today and then hitting up Fiesta Worlds after. My TSB is +11 today (CTL 73) due to my long weekend off in Mexico City. Plan on putting in a high TSS weekend to ramp things back up.

Since it's mostly crits left for the rest of the season (fitness/freshness is rarely my limiting factor in these so far, mostly positioning and tactics, and I can still crank out a decent sprint most days despite any training load), and because my base power is lower than we thought it was with the old PM, I'm back to doing off season/base season stuff to get a jump start on next year, including big gear work and weights. Interestingly, coach has me doing longer big gear efforts than I usually see recommended. 2x25 at 55 rpm, etc. Haven't found a ton of supporting literature on doing them this long, but if it's part of the same process he used to develop his 400w+ monster tt athlete that just won states with a 31.6 mph 40k, then I'm not going to argue.
This weekend should be awesome. Going up to the Bay to ride some of my favorite roads on Sat and Sunday. Trying to get a group organized on Sat too, but unfortunately there's a stage race that weekend so a lot of folks can't make it. Sat will be a hwy 9 to skyline to pescadero, then back via tunitas Creek loop, Sun will be a less organized old santa Cruz hwy to Boulder Creek and big basin. Hopefully the roads are mostly fixed up by now! No one chimed in so far saying they were closed.
Anyhow, bay area bikeforums folks are welcome as well! Pm me if you want specific time and meet up info

That workout is way old school. Remember 42t small rings and corncobs were all they had for these same mountain roads you are going to ride. You'd do as well to invest in a 7400 DA drivetrain and push a big gear all the time. Certainly watch some old race films to see how their pedaling style differed so you don't hurt yourself. Ullrich would be the natural guy to zoom in on but his technique might be a bit too refined to pick up on easily.
Alternative is starting from a dead stop on half mile long walls above 12% and grinding it out from the saddle. Throwing a few of those in should be about right for what your coach wants and double as core work.

Been dragging all year. Not hitting metrics, lethargic, etc. Teammate recommended getting blood checked. Results came in showing I've got some good ole iron deficient anemia. Crit in the mid-30%, hemoglobin around 11g/dl, iron at 35 ug/dl, ferritin less than 5 ng/ml.
At least the results help explain the dragging, but sounds like the rebuild process is a couple months.

My doc is a triathlete, so he's got some endurance athletic understanding. He put me on an iron supplement plan with some rechecks scheduled in the near future.

I suck at recovery days! I rode too hard for an Z2 ride during recovery week ended the day with beer and greasy food. Now I am spending my off day battling a food hangover (it wasn't that much beer).

It's a bummer, but happy to have identified the issue, and established a plan to address in time for some target races.

My best friend suffered for a long time before they finally scoped him and found a bleeding ulcer caused by H. pylori.

A few random VO2 hills and tempo on Tuesday for 100 TSS
Yesterday did the hill climb race ride. We climb at a nice high tempo/low threshold pace and then take off like a bunch of bats out of hell at the go point. One dude just went all out, I followed at 480 watts for the first minute, came within a few watts of my 5' PR from years ago, and still got dropped by the 4 leaders before the road flattened out. Hovered 10 seconds back but legs were screaming so hard I turned it down to tempo for the flat part, then when the road turned up again I struggled mightily to hold zone 4 for 9 minutes. But when I turned the corner for the last stretch I somehow managed another 7.5 minutes at VO2 pace and actually felt good. PRed that final segment by a full minute. 200 TSS for the 50 miles

Group ride tonight. Could have been a lot harder, but the heavy hitters didnt show up...which is nice sometimes. Still ended up with a 23.5mph average for the hour.
So far, riding with shingles is more or less fine. If im riding somewhat hard I don't notice anything, racing I definitely dont notice the pain, but as soon as I start to cool down it starts to hurt a little bit. Going to keep riding as long as im not in a ton of pain. My doctor said I was fine to keep riding, basically as the pain and discomfort allows...although I don't think this doctor knows the kind of riding I do.

Whoa. I missed that. I had a case of shingles in law school and I was pretty miserable. There's no way I could have exerted myself. Where is it manifesting? Mine was on a band around my head.

Its on the right side of my torso, basically runs along my ribs from my belly button to my spine. It took my dr. all of 1 second to know what it was. Luckily I dont have the flu like symptoms, but the constant burning pain is awful. When I ride its been fine, but its also been waking me up in the middle of the night...then its hard to go back to sleep. I am going to try calling my doctors office again tomorrow for something to curb the pain at night so I can sleep more than a few hours before it wakes me up...i can deal with it during the day with ibuprofen.
First popped up with symptoms last week, and I raced this past weekend without any issues (had some pain all weekend, but it went away when i was racing) although I didnt have the rash and blisters until sunday night/monday morning.
I will be glad when this is over.
