Thanks! I hope my legs feel good as I have been going pretty heavy on the training for the state TT and had not planned on this weekend being more than a training race, but since I decided to do Ocala instead of Pensacola and with the (seemingly) sudden disappearance of Sugarloaf RR, I, on relatively short notice, hope I can bring some decent legs in. I know I've got a lot if fitness, I'm just hoping the freshness that I need will be there
I agreed to go see Spawn1 at his college the weekend before his birthday without thinking about the State TT. Guess which weekend.
Making great progress on the coding, though. I have the algorithm purring like a kitten in a Python demo. Next I have to code it in C++ to extend a class of objects in a huge open source analysis code and write all of the methods that will be needed for it. That will be mind numbingly boring.

Hope you are doing well this weekend. I'm taking a coding break for a bit. Actually got out for a two hour ride yesterday during the football game and I had great legs for about an hour and was kicking myself for not racing.

I'm making about $150/hour doing this coding. I can get that much because I understand the physics and chemistry that is being coded more than just being a good coder. And I'm only doing it because I can later use what I have developed to work on problems that I am interested in research-wise.
I am sure that there are a lot of CISE undergrads that could do what you want for a lot cheaper than that. Maybe some are racers so you could have them do it for in-kind instead of $'s.

I often wish that I majored in EE, ME or even computer science instead of chemistry.
I learned this about myself when I took electronics lab during my last semester of school.
The digital part was the best, esp. using flip flop and logic gate chips.
I always got better grades in math (linear, calcIII, differential eq's) than chem. anyway.
There is this guy about my age who works at the nanotechnology company I'm at who's job entitles developing complex algorithms to solve/model problems, system automation, IT, instrumentation and even general machine shop type stuff. His undergrad is in math.
I'm super jealous.

I'm fresh off an 80 min. tempo ride.
About to hit up 30 min or so of ab work before my protein shake.
rdy. set. go!

ok, so where is all this "tempo" stuff in Friel's book? He doesn't really talk about it at all, and doesn't recommend it in his training plans.
seems like a lot of you guys do long tempo rides. what is the benefit of this, and why does friel avoid it?

i don't think Friel skirts over it.
Tempo/Z3 is a very economical way to train in terms of time, fitness gain, and physiological gains. SubZ4/subthreshold/sweet spot is by far the most economical.
However, there's a tendency to overdo it in lieu of more intensive stuff, and people end up being somewhat fast but not totally race ready. Though if you are a triathlete, this might be the way to go.

ok. thanks
friel really doesn't say much at all about it. mostly talks about doing nothing but z2 in early base, and then going onto more intense stuff. not much in between. should i be doing tempo during base instead of z2? how much of it?

ok, i found a good blog post that explains it very well and how it can be worked into a training plan. sounds like long z2 are preferred, but if you don't have time then can benefit from doing shorter rides at tempo pace. makes sense.

do you find your triceps getting sore holding this position? It's by far my favorite, but my triceps do get sore after about an hour in the position.

Today: ZCI™s. Started off at 4.2W/kg and worked up to 4.3W/kg for the sixth one. With weather in the 80s, I feel human again, and the power looks more like it did back in April before Austin started channeling Phoenix.

I have had so little time to ride in the last few months that I feel that I should post here that I was able to get out for 1.5 hours of Zone 2 today. It felt nice to ride.
I'm going to try and get in a ride tomorrow, too.

kensuf may feel otherwise, but I don't usually ride an hour in that position. I don't ride in any single position for an hour in the break. I have to vary it up to stay fresh, and when it's getting close to zero hour, I'd better be on the drops or I'll be in no man's land pretty quick. JRA, I don't feel the need to be aero all the time so I'm not in that position forever.

I think I may do some ZCIs today instead of my normal 2x20, haven't done any of those in a while.

one question regarding that particular position, people say about time trials is that you should stay relaxed so that the arm muscles will help clear lactate as opposed to creating more of them. For that particular position, how do you stay relaxed so that it doesn't feel as if your arms are bearing a lot of the weight? The reason i ask this is that collegiate time trials are basically Merckx TT, so i have to stay aero for extended periods of time.

I don't use this position that much anymore as the speed bars are better aerodynamically.

Given that you only touch the bike at the feet, rump, and hands, you can also just put out more power. That will unweight the other two areas nicely.
I've found my road bike to be terribly uncomfortable on slow trips with the kids. Not enough weight on my feet.
