I don't think I'd want to race on a course where I could hit stuff just racing. I did nearly clock a guy at the track who decided to pick up one of the marker sponges and move it while I was doing a pursuit effort. I saw him just in time and moved uptrack but still grazed him with my helmet.
Unnerving.

To fix this situation, you'd have to produce a cylindrical foam barrier that was banded/wrapped around the pole. It wouldn't be a terrible thing to come up with. These things can disperse a lot of energy. I'm not sure what the cost would be, but I doubt if it would be insane. If you could just put them up and leave them, then there might be something good come out of this.
Problem would be the small market not leading to economies of scale.

It's the little things that make me happy:
You've been upgraded from Los Angeles, CA (LAX) to Houston, TX (IAH - Intercontinental) on Wed., May. 29, 2013. Your new seat is 1L. Below is a recap of your flight information:
787, so I get a full laydown seat prior to the batteries failing.

I'm a pilot, I know these things...

There could be a business opportunity here. If you could come up with an inexpensive, effective product, that could be shipped, you could rent the barriers out to races around a region, or sell them to a promoter of multiple races.
Problem would be the small market not leading to economies of scale.

hmm... I wonder if it would be possible to rent them out from ski resorts when they aren't using them in the summer. Start a business to manage that bit.

Our local association has a bunch of those crash pads and tall metal barriers available to organizers.

Those ski barriers look like a really good option. At $200 a pop, we're talking about a total of maybe $5000 to cover a course at corner apexes and exits. That's not that bad.

I raced for years (from about 6-19) and then taught skiing while in college (there is a reason I descend the way I do ). I taught either children OR those who thought they were experts. It's amazing how many parents just wanted to see their kids go up the lift and come back down even if they weren't ready and even more amazing was the amount of "experts" that could get way in over their heads in a matter of seconds not realizing the pending danger...
