My fiancee is going up early for a work conference, so I'm looking at dropping 800+ for airfare (including the dog), or driving solo for 18+ hours with the dog. Gas for the car should run about $350 roundtrip. What would you do here?
I hate these long road trips, but that's nonetheless what I would do. Driving is a lot cheaper, and with the added complications introduced by bringing the dog, it'll be a lot simpler. That distance is actually pretty similar to what my wife and I have to drive between Nashville and Boston when we make that trip - next one is in just over a month, we actually had similar calculations to make as we are finally moving our cats from my mother in law's house to our place in the frozen north. Anyway, it's a butt buster for sure, but once you've done it a few times, you get used to it. I've done that round trip four times now, plus each direction in a moving van. Fifth time coming up. Bring audiobooks and some good CDs and don't waste a lot of time farting around at rest stops and you'll be fine. The first four to six hours are the worst. After that, you kind of settle in.

+1

Unless, it's a small dog that you can carry on, I wouldn't put the dog through that, and the associated risk.

I made one out of a scrap piece of flooring that was handy. It fits perfectly in my car, but does not look as slick as that one. I can fit two bikes in a Honda Fit if I slide the passenger seat forward (my bikes are biggish).

yeah I found a company called delta that sells less expensive wheel and bike mounts that can you be mounted on a board. Looks like I can build a pretty snazzy one for $100 or less.

A 2x6 or 2x8 plus fork mounts is just as effective and probably cheaper. You can also add Wheel mounts too, so your front wheels stay in place.

And if you want to get really creative, you can cut the board to fit the exact shape of the back of your car.

And I so want a minivan just for bike races. I keep looking at cheap ones on Craigslist, but given my wife's current job situation, I'm not inclined to drop a few thousand dollars on a third vehicle.

With two dogs, a summer vacation that we'd really need two cars to pull off (2 weeks of camping with a teen and two dogs) and regular trips with company (that necessitate multiple cars) to our house in the mountains this kinda makes sense.

I used 2 of those fork mounts and a 2x4 for my road trip to Tulsa last year. Worked out perfect

Add these to your setup, and you don't have to fiddle with adjusting for lawyer tabs:

you can buy fork mounts at Performance and a board at your LHS. I used a mount system like that for a while, but found it to be a PITA with bars not quite fitting. Now I just leave the front wheels on and the bikes complete.

I use Last Pass Password Manager. It has both a free and a pay component, and gets you access across all platforms. It will generate and store passwords for you, and you can store a bunch more info on there too. It definitely has a learning curve when you first get going (and I'm actually still on it), but I've been very happy with it.

INA381 / inno (RV-Inno) / ADVANCED CAR RACKS,

Disclaimer: I helped them at Interbike for two years, I helped install their racks on the Jelly Belly team vehicles, but I did it all for free. I bought my bars and mounts at a discount but nothing near free.

Also, back in the day, there were some pick up bed fork mount things. I bolted them to 2x4s. In my '88 GTI, with the back seat removed, I could carry 4 bikes with their forks mounted to such things. I don't think I ever took a picture, unfortunately, but it worked well.

Based on the following image it seems that two 90 degree brace things, with a spare front axle and misc stuff, would work well. Some of us have tons of stuff like that laying around.

I attached Hollywood fork mounts to a 1x6. My Jeep has 2 of them, and it could probably fit 3 bikes if I needed to.

I am an avid tab remover on bikes with rim breaks.

Keep in mind though, that bikes with disc brakes, especially those with the disc mounted the wrong way (forcing the wheel "out", instead of "in"), may rely on lawyer tabs to prevent the wheel from popping out during breaking. Combine that with wimpy exposed cam QR levers and bad things could happen.
