Hey, I never said I was going to sell all my stuff.

Let's be honest about it. I'm heading up to Windham this weekend and will spend large portions of the weekend on the bike. I just need to flip the switch back to "on" from "dim"...

Speaking of which, Globe, want to tow me around for a while this weekend? I was thinking of doing one or more of the TOC stages.

Hey sounds like fun, but I'll be busy with 4th of July family stuff. Check in next time you're around though!

If you're looking for company, there is a fastish ~50 mile ride Saturdays 8:30am out of Overlook Bikes in Woodstock that I think usually does the Kaaterskill Falls and Stony Clove climbs. I know the guys and it's a good ride.

Details somewhere on here probably: https://www.facebook.com/groups/439318609549965/

This was a pretty crappy day on the bike.

First, I was hit by a car as I was rolling out of my neighborhood. A woman, who I assume is a neighbor, rolled through a stop sign and hit me. Fortunately, she was going slow, and I was able to turn away a bit to minimize the impact. She ended up just hitting the rear of my bike, and I was able to keep it upright. She apologized as I yelled at her, then she drove away. That's when I realized how messed up my rear wheel was. I am pretty sure it's going to need a complete rebuild.

After that, I nearly decided to just go home, but instead swapped rear wheels and went for my ride.

Later, a small light blue van in the oncoming lane, swerved over the double yellow line at me. I've never had that happen before. Maybe he was just not paying attention or texting and swerved out of his lane accidentally, but it didn't seem like it.

Then shortly before I got home, an old lady laid on her horn just because I was there. I've encountered her before. I don't really know what her problem is.

It was almost enough to make want to quit riding.

Also, my wife went to the orthopedist today. (There is a new ortho clinic near here that handles walk ins and is open on the weekends.) She crashed last weekend and still wasn't feeling much better. Turns out she cracked her hip. The injury is apparently pretty common among the elderly when they fall out of bed. So no riding for her for 6 to 8 weeks.
Hopefully today is better.

Keep your chin up @IslandRider, ultimately the most important thing is to have fun on the bike, if that's not happening then hang it up. Sounds more like burnout though, some of us put a lot of weight into our results and with all the hours committed to racing I can't really blame them.

Cycling for me is an antidepressant....not that I stare at a noose hanging on my ceiling all day but it makes me feel better somehow. Heck, my biggest issue with racing is that I put too many hours relaxing on my bike; no way I'm going to not ride under an hour on Saturday even if there is a race on Sunday!

Much of this might be because I haven't raced all that much this year, so I need to get it back into my blood. Or because I expected better results after training so steadily through the winter, but... there you have it.

Could this just be a summer doldrums?
I vote summer doldrums.

So I say do both...golf and race bicycles. I went out for a training ride on Saturday morning and then to the golf practice range in the afternoon.

Thanks guys.

And Chappy, I did not get her insurance. I went by her house last night to get it, but she was too busy to come to the door. I will try again tonight, but am not optimistic. I do have several friends in the local police department who can help me should I chose to go that route.

FIGHT!

There was a fight after Longsjo: Cyclist Fight!

(And no, Rwaki wasn't involved. It might have been more entertaining if he were though.)

That's probably the biggest reality of this. I haven't raced since White Plains and my training was screwed up so I ended up with 2 hours on the trainer all weekend. I didn't get my dose.

That's what I've been doing. Wednesdays are great. 6am golf, 6pm bike.

That seems like a pretty significant one. Why does your wife hate it?

She subscribes to the new math. Bike + outdoors = death. There's more to it than that, but she has a fear of bikes and me riding them which doesn't appropriately correspond to the reality of the situation. It's getting better, but it can create a bit of a strain.

Sheesh ... this all hits close. While my wife doesn't hate my riding/racing, she's none too thrilled with how much time it eats up on top of riding out on some potentially unsafe roads. I used to play a ton of golf and have been out maybe 2 times in the past two years. I jumped into a round a week or so ago (played like crap) and had a blast. It is amazing that so much time is necessary to be racing pack fill. There are days (and races) where I spend a good amount of time thinking "why am I doing this". Sadly, I don't have any good answers for you, but I feel the pains.

well, you could get hit in the head by a ball, or struck by lightening on the golf course...I'm just kidding of course. It's very nice that your wife is worried about your safety. Our loved ones concerns should definitely never be overlooked when it comes to our hobbies!

sorry to hear that; good luck

perhaps there may have been damages to her car, and you can get her that way?

3 hours round trip? I drove 7.5 hours round trip for a RR a week ago and this past weekend was 8+ hours round trip for a stage race. Hell, I drive 6 hours round trip for 1 hour cross races.

It seems that golfers (the ones who don't do any other exercise) are more likely to die of heart disease or cirrhosis.

My wife has a nice policy on me, so there's a look of disappointment during the race when they announce a crash and she sees me roll by.

I think it's a totally reasonable thing to feel, it can often feel like death by a thousand cuts. I'd question the sanity of anyone who didn't feel a burned out from time to time.

haha! I grew up with a dad who was into mountaineering in the days way before cell phones and gps. My mum used to fake disappointment every time he made it back safely. I think she was joking!?! Then, when I was old enough, I would go too. We got "slightly" lost several times due to weather in the Scottish hills. We were sworn to forget to tell my mum about those adventures!
Almost 20 year ago I married a guy who is into extreme sports. I much prefer him alive and unharmed but at the same time, I wouldn't want him sitting home, bored on the couch, because there's a small chance he could get hurt/lost. The good news, he has nothing to say to me about cycling being a dangerous hobby
