Okay, I can speak about this now...
I was hit by a company truck back at the end of July. No signal, just turned into me. My bike was evaluated and claimed a total loss. My left hand took a pretty bad hit and this was the hand that was very slow to heal from the radius breaking way back in the spring. I've been riding, entered a HC TT this past weekend, and finally got the settlement from the company. New bike posted the in Race Rig thread.
I heard bad things happen in threes so I think I am all done.

of course. it's always the other driver who doesn't see the first driver waving that gets annoyed. all I want is people to be predictable.

Does anyone else wake up extremely cold?
I feel like my body goes into hibernation mode every night. I go out for a morning ride - 60 degrees F - and have to wear thermal base layer, arm warmers, knee warmers, gloves, hat. And still, I physically shiver for the the first 20 minutes. Then I warm up a bit, then by about 40 minutes in I'm warm.
60 degrees in the evening is tolerable with no warm gear, or maybe just arm warmers.
The other guys at the morning ride today - all had arm warmers, half had gloves, and only one other had knee warmers. I was the only one with a hat under my helmet.

Thanks, I'd rather have not been hit in the first place of course!
Cheers mate. The TT was a good move for me mentally.

Only exception is if it's a stressful thing, like promoting a race or something. Then I'm revved up almost as soon as I get going.
One trick I do is that I'll get super warm as early as possible. I'll take a hotter than normal shower. I'll crank the heat in the car (if applicable). Hot coffee. Etc. Once I get warmed up I'm good.
I haven't ridden in a few? weeks but when it gets cooler out I tend to add a wind vest, thin hat, and a LS base layer or jersey. Head and torso insulation, with windproof stuff on my torso.

Understood.
One thing that I think about is my 2009 crash. Okay, it cost me a bunch of money that I'm sorely missing right now, but other than that and the actual physical pain and inconvenience of the hospital stuff etc for the most significant month or two it had a lot of beneficial effects. It prompted me to take significant (more than a week or two) time off the bike for the first time since 1982 or so. I used my immobile time to consider a custom frame, researched wheels, and decided to diet for the first time in my life. I returned to my 155 lbs weight from 1997-1999, I did a big off season, got that frame, got new wheels, and had the best season ever in terms of points - I upgraded to Cat 2 for the first time ever in August.
Without the bad stuff (crash, wheelchair, etc) I'd have realistically not done much new, not learned anything, and I'd have been worried about being too heavy at 210 in the winter, racing at 190-200 in the spring, 180-190 during the summer, and realistically I'd have been a middling 3 again. Even now, when I feel "heavy" after my 2010 year, I'm 10 lbs lighter than I was at my lightest in 2009.
I'm applying one of the lessons I learned then - I'm taking some solid time off the bike now, focusing on losing weight after keeping something in reserve to help my dad, after dealing with Junior's massive fever, and recovering from being sick myself. I last rode the first week of Sept and I didn't really make plans to ride any time soon. I have to admit that I thought about riding again at about 2 AM this morning - nowadays I can't sleep well at night and I think riding will help fatigue me more.

CDR: this year has taught me (again) to not fret over the small things. (Maybe this time I'll remember!)
Now a week off or three weeks of just puttering around, no big deal. There is only so much I can control. (not much)

First test back 92.5%, Dumb mistake on one of the questions cost me 2.5%...
Also i've been riding at 6 most morning because of how my class schedule works out, it is so cold right now (it was 43 according to the srm yesterday, and a blistering 49 today). At least i've become really close with the one football player who lives in the dorm who always is getting into the elevator to leave for practice at the same time as me

my wife did a nice thing.
I didn't even have to ask her to hide the "ncnca" part; she takes initiative.

I think I am getting sick, off the bike since Sunday and through Friday. Plan for Saturday to do a 75 mile charity ride with 6k of climbing. Good times, good times. I am going to train for it by eating another donut.

This is really dangerous. Misinterpreted communication between drivers and cyclists is a significant cause of accidents. "But he was looking right at me!"
