Well, his reasoning is a bit hard to refute, isn't it?

(Say I, though I'm perfectly aware that helmets probably do have a marginal effect in preventing injury and maybe, maybe even death)

He yucks up how pedestrians are at a higher risk of head injury than cyclists. Perhaps that's because of so many cyclists wearing helmets.

There's a stickied helmet thread at the top of this sub-forum for this kind of thing...

Oh look...a helmet thread on the A&S!
You should be shot for starting another helmet thread when there is an existing stickie for that.

And you suggest shooting someone in the Safety section of the forums?

It's always hard to refute without citations for his stats. As Deming said "Numbers are numbers, numbers are not knowledge"

Hey: always room for another thread, but this does fall well within the purview of a relevant, existing thread that's not going to drop off the front page within a month...

Oh, wait, someone already posted the OP link there...

Those stats have been posted countless times in other helmet threads, as have the counter stats.

His best point IMO is about the safety culture that helmets seem to symbolize. The Dutch have a nice and pragmatic way of seing those things. I envy them. Here in Denmark, the latest thing is that fines for minor offences are up, and you can now be fined for every single thing that is not completely in order (like a missing bell, or lock, or reflectors on your vintage pedals etc. etc.). If the police should stop me with my present city bike's configuration, I'd be fined c. 900 $...

Meanwhile, cars can still drive 50 kmh in the Copenhagen center. It's plain stupid. Like he says: ignoring the bull in the china shop.

I knew I shouldn't have clicked on this thread....

More of the same, polarized opposites still feuding, each accusing the other of 'loading' the debate in this and other threads; the only difference I see is that NOW, they are not calling each other 'unmentionables', they are hinting and insinuating it. Polishing their games, I guess.......

Here's the bottom line, folks: you do what you do, and let me do what I do, and keep your f'n opinion to yourself until I'm out of hearing range. I will do the same. Neither of you have ANY factual basis for belittling the other train of thought; you are NOT automatically smarter than the other side because of your choice.

For the 'anti-helmets': you cannot 'reason' away what amounts to religious belief; ignore, and go about your life. Just remember that you do not possess any special wisdom, you are arguing your point as strenuously as anyone. Shut it and pedal.

For the 'pro-helmets': one fact for you to remember when you argue -- if someone who does not conform to your belief gets hurt and requires extreme care, it's not "YOUR MONEY, YOUR TAX DOLLARS" keeping them alive, they CEASED being "YOUR" dollars when our favorite Uncle collected them. They could just as easily be MINE, or one of the Walton family. That said, embrace your personal choice and security, real or not. That's what you need to be fulfilled, that's fine. Other people need other things for fulfillment, it's not your call what those things should be.

To BOTH: "Never argue with a fool, people may not be able to tell the difference." You prove this every time this debate resumes. So learn to "live and let live".

I'm out.

The reason this doesn't fly is because you came here, knowing what the discussion will be about. You are free to come and go at any time, and so insinuating that you are somehow being subjected to someone else's opinion is... odd. The whole purpose of this thread is to share opinions and, more importantly, trade information on the matter. If you don't want to be subjected to someone else's opinion, such as whether you should or should not be wearing a helmet... don't participate or open the thread.

As far as calls for civility and not down-talking, I agree.

Good advice...

Neither of you have ANY factual basis for belittling the other train of thought
for me, it's an opinion that lacks a factual basis to which I respond

you cannot 'reason' away what amounts to religious belief; ignore, and go about your life.
so true. Far too often I see that beliefs are based on faith and impression, 2 things that many do not want to revisit

"Never argue with a fool, people may not be able to tell the difference."
I have a hard time with this one because I've seen the fools argue, been quiet about it and ended up being subjected to the fools beliefs. That's how MHLs are passed; little to no opposition to the propaganda spread by the believers of foam.

I'm out.
I'll bet you'll eventually end up back here at some point.

Gee---------there for 3 or 4 days there were no posts to this thread. I kinda hoped it had died out. But of course the anti helmet trolls couldnt let that happen.

BTW trolls------you are still peeing into the wind. Im still wearing my helmet!!!! Apparently I value my brain more than you do yours. But I guess that is logical.
