Suitable grease or lube from the hardware store?

Hello everyone,
I'm going to the hardware store and I'd like to know if there is anything special about the chain lube they sell at the bike shops except the price. Can I pick up something adequate for my bike chain at the hardware store? If so, what is it?

Thank you for your advice.
Jessica

To grease bearings I use marine grease. I bought a tube at Wally-World for a few bucks. Should last a few decades, even when applied liberally.

For chain lube, everyone has a different opinion on what works best. What you need often depends on the climate in which you ride, such as rainy wet conditions vs dry conditions.

Bicycle chain lube is a combination of aliphatic (like motor oil) and aromatic (like actual mineral spirits, not the environmentally friendly substitutes) hydrocarbons.

One $7 quart of mineral spirits plus 1/4 to 1/2 of a $3 quart of 30 weight motor oil will do the job.

I use the epic ride stuff from Mao mart, wipe chain, cassette, and tires after every ride with chlorox wipes(two wipes for chain, one fresh one for bike then tires), re apply lube, wipe chain dry with paper towel. Seems to keep that "clean freshly lubed" chain feeling every day :-).

Dry teflon lube from a store would work on the chain.
