Rear wheel axle replacement

Hey guys,

I had just opened up my rear wheel hub (due to some play in the wheel) and while i was at it, found some pitting on the cones and worn thread on the axle. The axle is 175mm long and 9mm in diameter. I need to get a replacement and was looking online and found mostly 175mm axles with 3/8" (9.525mm) diameter axles HERE.
My question is whether i can use the slightly bigger diameter (bigger by 0.525mm) axle on my bike. Also, can i just use the cones included in that set or do I need to look at cone dimensions and do something else?
It's just a used bike i use for commuting and don't really want to spend much on it.

Thanks a lot,
Jacob

In my experience, cup and cone hubs can spin pretty good even when pitted. How do the cups in the hub shell look/feel? Clean, grease, and reassemble and see how it spins.

I would also rebuild it if possible. In fact, other than larger BMX hub axles, I've never heard of slightly larger axles for bike hubs... 9mm is the standard for QR.

Are you sure you're looking at the right axle type? 9mm seems to be the standard for QR wheels and 3/8ths is the standard for bolt on. (I think...)

Wow, if you google around for this, you come up with an interesting thread with the Sheldon Brown (RIP) in it!

NOT. 9mm is standard for front axles, 10mm is standard for rear axles.

3/8" is also a standard for both front and rear axles.

Wheels Manufacturing has a wide selection, which most bike shops can order, Niagara also carries many of Wheels Manufacturing parts. Wheels Manufacturing Hub Axles

Thanks for the help guys...The axle I had was pitted so badly and i couldn't tighten the cones without having considerable play and friction. I was able to salvage an axle from an old bike...it's better than the old one but not amazing...must be something wrong with the races. But I'm not gonna try anything more...It should work fine for how long i think I'll be having my bike.

3/8" is like 10mm, but its not 10mm..

Most of the planet with the exception of the US uses the Metric system

Rarely is the same diameter used front and rear.

They might spin OK but you'll still have to choose between having a slightly wobbly rim and having an axle that feels crunchy when you spin it with your fingers.
