Chain jumping problem.
Hi guys, I have a Cube Agree Gtc 2011 model and I have a very strange problem (well to me anyway). Having failed to find a long cage ultegra derailleur to replace my old short cage, I went down the path of replacing it with a Shimano Deore 10 speed. I bought a 10 speed chain and a new cassette. After watching the vids for some reason when I pull away on my bike I get a horrendous noise from the chainring. The chain appears to jump teeth at the front. I thought it was a freehub problem at first because I couldn't work out how how the chain could slip without jumping off!
After changing the freehub, I getting the same problem. I recently noticed that if I put the chain on the big cog it won't slip but when I put it on the small cog it does . So to me the freehub must be ok. Could it be the inner chainring worn, or maybe a tension problem?
I have messed with the derailleur tensioner but I still get the same problem. Cheers guys. Rhurbarb

is it still stock, as purchased?
post clear side pics of the chain rings, with chain removed, please... 14 years on a pair of tiagra rings... it may be time for a refresh.

Very impressed the brand logo on that crank has survived all this time.

Ok, I will change the rings and see what happens.
As I couldn't buy Ultegra, I guess I will have the same problem with the chainrings. If so what would you recommend as a replacement? Thanks. Rhurbarb

Both chainrings look pretty worn to my eyes. Is that a Shimano Chain as they may be directional with stamped markings on the plates going on the outside and inside plates should be mostly unmarked. If backwards the shifting is worse but the chainrings may be the main problem. Also if you want to get original replacement rings you can try scouring the net using every search you can think of. My friend has a 6700 groupset and I can usually find new-out-of-production parts if I spend enough time and wait till you find something reasonably priced rather than 3x the original cost which some try to get. Just found a brand new set of 6700 STI triple shifters for $160 on ebay about 8 months ago

Agreed. Those are great photos, which is unusual for threads like this. They show unmistakably that the chainrings are too worn to work with a new chain.
Probably cheaper to replace the cranks and chainrings as a set. I'd get an equivalent Hollowtech II crankset (plus the corresponding bottom bracket bearing set). They're great.

Tricky. Those chainrings are designed to blend into the crank arms. I’m not sure if Dura Ace was compatible but this might work, someone else on here like maddog will know

and yeah likely just replacing the whole crankset will be easier to source

Don't they have little square boxes with a check mark by ONE chain ring combo and ONE crank length?

I'm surprised the Deore 10-speed derailleur is working with your road 10-speed. Shimano changed the pull rate when they went to MTB 10-speed. The standard practice when you want long-cage 10-speed road was to get a 9-speed MTB derailleur.

Sounds like someone / site has listed it badly.

You just need to measure to find out if the crankset uses 130 or 110 bcd chainrings. Order new chainrings to fit and set of new chainring bolts. Should not be expensive.

Pretty sure it’s 130. And it’s 5 arm.

To be fair it's early days for testing it but it goes up and down the derailleur as it should. occasionally it will hesitate around the middle cog but I put this down to possibly the wrong route in the cable going into the gear changer on the handlebars.

I guess it's best to match the old arm length, do the measurements vary because of the length of the riders legs? or am I over thinking it?
Guessing I will have to take the crank off and measure form the middle of the shaft to the middle of the pedal shaft. Cheers

I would get new chainrings or cranks for an authorized Shimano dealer. Random cheap stuff from unknown unauthorized third party sellers is not really a good way to go. I would make sure to match old arm length unless you have a fitter telling you otherwise.
