Perhaps aggressive bad manners is thought a virtue in some places, trailer parks and the like; in my book, it is still a sign of ignorance, an uncivil upbringing and is thoroughly to be depricated.

If a newcomer arrives and asks a question that has been dealt with before, perhaps it would be better to point him towards the existing answers, rather than to explode into ranting unpleasantness. This isn't a Wild West mining camp after all, is it?

Well old thread or not lubing chains is still an important thing to take into consideration and there are always new and improved products coming out on the market.
Got this from an old timer mechanic:
T. W.
Long Lasting Tire Shine
Wet 'n Black
Professional Tire Dressing
for deep black, wet looking tires
with U.V. Inhibitors!

We live in a desert environment, hot and dusty. I believe it's the silicon in this stuff that works and I doubt if the brand name is a consideration.

Perhaps being a stuck up know-it-all is a virtue in overly snobbish sections of the former Empire, but to me it just shows a lack of respect for long established forum ettiqutte and is to be ridiculed at every opportunity.

If a newcomer arrives and starts dragging out multiple (Yeah Nigel, this wasn't the only one.) six year old threads and then proceeds to give others (as in not me) the "I'll do as I like" treatment when they "politely" inform him of his transgression the time for civility passes rather quickly. We have a clearly labeled Search Function at the header of every page here and every post has a date, any board such as this will direct you to search for the most recently posted thread (especially in topics like this that get repeated weekly) therefore making the exhumation of long dead threads completely unwarranted and subject to some form of backlash. This isn't the Royal High Tea after all, is it? Try being a bit more Liverpool and Birmingham instead of "upon Tyne". Canny?
Although I do have to admit that I'm a bit envious of you being so close to Hadrian's Wall

Depends on the type of silicon...many are bad ones and will penetrate deeply into the tire causing the tire to prematurely to release it's protective compounds and dry out. That's why you see a lot of tires that have the sidewall cracking and brown coloration of the tires and a lot of pissed off tire owners when the tire company denies warranty coverage/tire replacement because of tire dressings causing the dry rot. Use a water based "non-silicon" tire dressing (contains "good" silicons) if you really want your tires to look good. Many tire companies now offer their own tire "approved" tire dressings that won't affect the tire warranty and many tire dressings have uv inhibitors/protection.

I prefer the natural matte look and use 303 Aerospace Protectant on tires and vinyl. 303 products isn't inexpensive but will protect just about anything, including carbon fiber.

Ah I apologize for not being clear about the subject. It is made for auto tires however this old timer uses it to lube chains on bicycles. Does that make any more sense? Hope so. I'd like to get the pros and cons of using a product such as this on the chain. Forget what it was made for I too like the matte look of the tires.

I'm locking this old chestnut of a thread. Tons of info in here if you read through it.
