Does anyone know...

Will bar-end shifters or Bar Cons fit a 22.2 mm handlebar? In particular, I'm looking at a project involving a bike I have and a trekking or butterfly bar.

Also, will they allow room to "cap" off the handlebar wrap as well.

I've only checked with one LBS so far...they didn't know the answer, and they didn't have any in stock to experiment with. I didn't want to pay for them to order Bar Cons just to find out.

No go. Unless you have some kind of special bars, standard 22.2mm bars are too small to fit barends. An expensive solution would be to use Paul Thumbies to convert those barends to high quality thumb shifters that you could mount wherever you want on the bar: https://www.paulcomp.com/ Otherwise, just look for a standard mountain bike shifter.

Generally, barcons fit road bars, not mountain bars. The only exception I can think of is the steel Albatross bar sold by Rivendell. The steel is so thin that they take mountain shifters and brake levers, and barcons will fit. It might possible to modify the barcons to fit the smaller diameter mountain bars. I don't know.

It's possible to tuck the end of the tape into the bars with barcons if the tape is thin and the tape enters the bars without bunching up or wrinkling. My Peugeot has two layers of cloth tape tucked in:

Maybe you could use Paul Thumbies with trekking bars.

Thanks for the info. I already have MTB style "shift pods" on them, but I thought that Bar-ends would be a more elegant solution. Oh well.

Shimano's instuctions say their bar-cons fit 19 to 22 mm bars. I can't inagine that .2mm would make that much difference.

22.2mm (for "MTB" bars) or 23.8mm (for "road" bars) is the outside diameter where the levers are mounted. Though they don't state it in the specs you linked to, Shimano is referring to the inside diameter.

For reference, one of my drop bars had an inside diameter of 20.6mm, and a different drop bar measured 21.1mm.

Anyone know of mt bike bar ends with an interior diameter large enough to fit barcons? It seems most manufacturers only list external diameter. Alternatively, an thoughts on cheap tri clip-on bars that I could cut down?

You're right of course. Still, all the MTB bars and ends I've ever had were very thin walled. At 22.2mm OD I'd bet the ID would be right around 19mm. Also, the bars on my bent are 22.2mm and I use bar ends on it.

It's possible, don't get me wrong, but it's far from guaranteed. The ID of the flat bar on a hybrid I just measured is 18.9mm. Don't feel like removing the grips on my MTB.

Any thoughts on my question? To be clear, I'm asking about attaching mt. bike bar ends (climbing bars) on a set of trekking bars. I know the barcons won't fit in the trekking bars, but I'm hoping I can find a pair of bar ends that might fit them. Hope this is clear. Thanks.

I put BarCon shifters into 7/8" bars quite often. I usually have to open up the ID. I made a fixture to hold the end of the handlebar concentric to my drill press spindle and then go in about 1.25" with a 3/4" drill.

Nope. Start at the end and work towards the middle. Wrap the last inch with twine.

I setup one of my road bikes with flat bars for a very long tour this summer. I am using a pair of Al/Carbon bar ends from Performance inside the grips to hold my campy 10spd bar end shifters. The setup works very well. I am using Cane Creek Ergo Barends on the outside of the bars. The resulting setup is incredible comfortable with a lot of very good hand positions.
I will attach a photo of the before and after setup. I call it my Faux TT setup when ever I get odd looks or comments. It looks pretty cool even if I do say so myself. I am sending a photo of the first setup, but the basic positioning of the bar ends has moved forward and the flat bar is shorter. The photos are for illustration. Here goes...!

Well, I found a LBS with some Bar-Cons, and took a set of digital calipers to measure them. No way in hell. Unless, of course, I went with MnHPVA Guy's very clever idea for making it work. Perhaps I'll look into that for my butterfly bar...though that doesn't sound easy.

Take a look at the Performance bar ends on my setup. You could cut the carbon down to make a very short holder for the bar end shifters and place them where you want for butterfly bars
