That Darn Noise

I could use some help with a noise on my wife's Specialized Ruby road bike. It has Shimano 105, 10 speed components with carbon fork and seat post. The bike is 3 years old with 4000 miles.

The noise sounds like one of those small birds at the beach. It occurs once per pedal revolution and stops when she stops pedaling. It she goes fast enough it becomes a solid whine.

I first thought it was a rear derailleur pulley. In fact after greasing the pulleys it stopped for a couple of rides. Now I think it is just intermittent. I've also swapped pedals and checked seat and seat post.

I was thinking about swapping rear derailleurs. I have a nearly new DuaAce RD7700, but it is 9 speed. I think some 9 speeds will work on 10 speed, but I'm not sure.

Try lubricating the pulleys again?
What are you using for chain lube? And how often?
Have the pedal bearings been greased?
Does the noise continue while pedaling in the standing position?
Your 9-speed D-A rear derailleur will work on a 10-speed Shimano drive train if the cage is long enough. It should work with a double crankset but probably not with triple due to the limited chain wrap capacity.

If it occurs once per pedal revolution, then it must be happening in a component that turns once per pedal revolution. I think that would rule out the rear derailer.

Check the bottom bracket, the chain rings or a shoe rubbing upon the crank arm.

I lubed the pulleys with grease from the bike shop a couple of times and don't think the noise should come back that quick. I use ProLink chain lube every 500 miles. Not sure about the standing position, but it doesn't usually start whining until several miles into the ride. It's NOT the pedals, I checked.

I had a Specialized saddle that creaked once per crank rotation. I thought it was the bottom bracket but the noise quit when pedaling in the standing position.
The noise was coming from the saddle rails where they enter a plastic block at the front of the saddle. Silicone spray lubricant fixed it.
