Bikes: A few bikes

Loud rear hub

My wife got me a new Specialized Rock Hopper for Christmas and I finally took it on a real ride last Tues. There were no water crossings or big drops just some mud and a lot of technical single track / rocks. I rinsed the bike off w/ the hose (being careful NOT to concentrate the hose on the hubs) when I got home. I put it in my stand today to make sure everything is straight before I go riding again and there is a low pitched ballsy rumble/groan from the rear hub. It sounds like the bearings are shot. The bike doesn't even have 100 miles on yet (maybe not even 50). What do you guys think the issue might be? Also, I would imagine the LBS where she got the bike would fix it for free under some kind of warranty, or doesn't that apply to bikes? This is my first new bike, so this is uncharted territory. Thanks guys (gals)

Shouldn't have hosed anything. Sounds like a lack of lubrication in the rear hub, or that it's loose, or both. Impossible to tell over the internet from the description. Pull the hub and inspect while you do the overhaul if you really wanted to.

Everyone hoses off their mtn bikes. You have not damaged your hub unless it was incorrectly assembled. Are you sure the noise is from the hub and not just an unlubed chain? Your bike is probably covered under warranty if it is the hub or freehub.

Bikes: too many bikes from 1967 10s (5x2)Frejus to a Sumitomo Ti/Chorus aluminum 10s (10x2), plus one non-susp mtn bike I use as my commuter

Hosing the bike off as you did is fine, certainly not any worse than riding in the rain or through puddles would be, and mtn bikes certainly shouldn't have problems with that.

As to the noise, it's probably minor, and not a hub failure. Could just be some grit under a seal lip or the like. I wouldn't sweat it and given that the bike is new, I'd expect that the LBS would inspect and correct it under warranty. While there speak to them about what it turns out to be and what, if anything, you should do different in the future, and also about general care of your new bike.

I called the LBS that we got the bike from and they said bring it in, no problem. So Monday morning it goes in and hopefully they get it done so I can ride Weds. Thanks for the info. Oh, where I was riding wasn't terribly muddy or wet so I'm not sure if it was properly lubed from factory. Btw, what do you guys generally use for hub lube? (Either road or MTB)
