Shimano Deore Shift Indicator Problem

I just got a used 2011 Trek 7.5 FX and have a question about the indicator on the rear shifter, I believe the shifter is a Shimano Deore SL-M530. When the red indicator bar has traveled as far to the left as it can I can still change to a lower gear, similarly the indicator bar never reaches the far right side. Everything works great, it is just that the indicator is not calibrated correctly. I am sure that as I get used to the bike I won't even look at the indicators but regardless: is there a simple way for me to adjust the indicator bar position? Thanks in advance!

Very simple - take it back! Shimano components on any new bike are covered by a one year warranty.

If it was a new purchase I would! But I got it off Craigslist, and don't know where it was originally purchased from.

IIRC, the indicator is part of the shifter body not the mechanism. If you unscrew the pivot bolt which also holds the mechanism and cover in place, it becomes obvious how to put it back together with the indicator in the proper place.

Sometimes the factory grease in those shifters dries out and gets sticky and the ratchet stops engaging. The fix is to open it up and spray the ratchet with WD40 to loosen it up. Someone probably did that to this shifter and then neglected to set the indicator on reassembly.

OK I'd still suggest a dealer and try for warranty. 2011 models are all still 'new'.

Bikes: I never learned to ride a bike. It is my deepest shame.

Yes... take it to a dealerr and LIE to them about where and when and from whom is was bought... or take out the 1 or 3 screws that hold the shifter together and try to figure out the (probably very simple)details of this problem.

Bikes: everywhere

I'd just ignore the problem, maybe put electrical tape over it. It's pretty easy to glance down to your crankset at the always-calibrated indicator right there.

What's to lie about? If that was brought to my shop I'd have no problem with the fact that it wasn't bought there. And Shimano aren't all that difficult to deal with either, nor are Trek , nor Cannondale, nor Norco nor any other reputable manufacturer.

OK - maybe the people YOU deal will are different

The warranty extends to the original purchaser only and is non transferable. The bike was purchased used and therefore the warranty is void.

However, if you have ever had any experience with this problem (it comes up from time to time) you would know that the fix is simpler than removing the shifter to send for warranty. The cable likely does not even need to be disconnected to rectify the problem. Maybe you send every bike with a flat tire back for warranty repair, but most of us don't.

Also, I have never seen this problem caused by anything other than the user trying to do maintenance and screwing it up, which is not a warranty issue.
