Correct Bottom Bracket?

Happy New Year

The frame I bought off ebay came with a shimano English BB. I bought a campy avanti chainset 52/42 as I thought a square taper was a square taper, which I now realise isn't. The chainset goes on but not as far as it should(I think) especially on the non drive side which sticks out more, the drive side isn't too bad.

I was told it should fit but it sticks out more than on my work bike which has a shimano BB/chainset. Do Campy chainsets stick out more?

Do I need a campy BB? If so what width? The English ones are 102mm which seems too narrow(current shimano one is 115mm) or 114mm which are advertised for a triple chainset. There doesn't seem anything in between. Also, do campy chainsets have different square tapers?

Did not want to buy something that was not necessary. Done that already!

Thanks

shimano & Campy square BB's do have a different taper. I'm quite sure that Avanti took a 111mm Campy BB.

111 is as good a guess as any .. maybe a Miche will be cheaper in

ISO taper.

need to buy 2 different sets of tools ! for the type you remove, and the other to match what replaces it.

Theres the precision engineering thinking that made Britain what it Is.

Check out the Sheldon Brown article about square bb taper. There are two primary tapers, JIS and ISO. Then there is oddball stuff. ISO is what Campagnolo cranks expect. From the Brown site:

"If you install an ISO crank on a J.I.S. spindle, it will sit about 4.5 mm farther out than it would on an ISO spindle of the same length."

Some Campagnolo cranks expect symmetric axles and others don't. So, not all 102mm (for example) Campagnolo axles are identical.

Wiggle sells "Tifosi Campagnolo fit bottom bracket[s]" in BSA 102mm, 111mm, and 115mm. No experience here and it is an assumption to infer that "Camnpagnolo fit" means "ISO." Also, to infer anything about how the length is divided between right and left.

Mr. Orange also has an article about BBs which says pretty much the same thing.
