Are these worth at these prices? Trek 1420 and Trek 1600

Hi, I'm helping my friend get her first new road bike. I saw an ad for Trek 1420 and emailed the guy right away. We met up with him today and saw that the bike looked very well maintain and clean. No rust. Is this the right price for this?

Also, I'm looking to upgrade from my Trek 1000 to this:

The 1420 is a $250 bike, maybe $300 if it is a "must have" . The 1600 retailed for $1200 five years ago, so I would feel OK paying about $500, if it's in good shape. Good luck with your search.

That 1420 has made quite the journey. I first saw it in Appleton/Oshkosh/FDL for $250 (?) then in Madison for like $350. Now Chicago for $450! Wow. Really too much for that bike.

To me 1/2 MSRP on a late model bike is a fair price, so I'd go $600 on the 1600.

*Edit: I could be wrong about the 1420, but I am almost certain it is the same bike. Either way, $450 is way too much.

1600 seems way high on this bike often see similar Treks listed in good condition for well under $500. For $1600 you could get a equivilant model on sale new right now.

Thanks. I'll tell my friend not to get it and I'll check my LBS.

Unless I'm misunderstanding you, I think you read through that too quickly. 1600 is the model number, $700 is the asking price.

As has been said, the 1420 is too high, not worth pursuing. The 1600 is very interesting. Look at the upgrades that have been added. They are pricey and desirable. I think $700 is a tad high, but if it was a good fit and in good mechanical condition, I'd pop for it. At $600 it's a really decent buy, at $500 it's a buy it now bike.

I found a Trek 1600 listed on craigslist. They are asking $600, that seems too high for this bike. They claim it has less than >500 miles. Is it worth looking at? What would be a fair price for this 5+ year old bike?
