Help identifying a Raleigh

Hi there,

I'm after some help identifying a Raleigh Roadster(?) I purchased recently.

The thing that is really confusing me is the chain ring which is pierced with the initials R H N (see photo).

Any ideas/thoughts would be much appreciated!

Rod brakes and what looks like a Raleigh fork. The old catalogs from about 38 show a "safety" roadster that looks like your bike, but it doesn't look to have the same chain ring.

Pretty hard to tell from the photos how close your bike matches. I'm not sure about the forks on the 38 bikes.

If that is a SA hub, it may have a date code on it. If so, look at the catalogs from about that date and see what seems to match.

Seems that the post war catalogs show Roadsters having the heron chain ring instead of a plainer treatment. There is always the possibility that the chain ring is not original to the bike, even if it is a Raleigh sprocket.

Probably somebody here knows what the story is with the RHN sprocket.

Bikes: 1940s Fothergill, 1959 Allegro Special, 1963? Claud Butler Olympic Sprint, Lambert 'Clubman', 1974 Fuji "the Ace", 1976 Holdsworth 650b conversion rando bike, 1983 Trek 720 tourer, 1984 Counterpoint Opus II, 1993 Basso Gap, 2010 Downtube 8h, and...

At first I assumed RHN was a typo; they made cranks with RIN on them, for Raleigh Industries Nottingham:

Any markings on the back side of that crank arm or rings? Any markings on the back side of the non-drive side arm?

Thanks for your thoughts guys, I'll take a closer look at the back of the arms and ring and see if there is anything there. The safety roadster does look similar, however this is single speed with 28" wheels?!

Bikes: Raleigh Sports

I find all this very interesting, Does this bike have a headbadge? Is it a Rudge, Humber?

Robin Hood Nottingham perhaps? Never seen it before but it sure looks related to the RIN chainring.

Maybe they were going for RHM and did a typo.
