Shimegro: Will This Work?

8 speed Campy brifter and 7 speed index-able IRD (Shimano spaced) freewheel? Is there just an extra click or is there need for a travel agent? I would be using a 9 Speed Shimano rear derailleur.

Probably not. If you get a Campy 8 speed rear mech, you will be fine, though.

You could do it, but try an alternate cable routing on the rd. That *might* work.

But the site, to which you link, says the Campy 8 sp and the 'standard' 7-sp freewheel (isn't that what Fender is talking about) are both spaced 5.0 mm. Seems to me it will work. But what do I know.

Campy and shimano RD's have different pull ratios. This will almost certainly not work. I just went through the same issue changing rear hub cassettes from campy to sram/shimano which meant I had to change the whole rest of the driveline if I wanted indexing.

That does work, with the [old] Campy RD as TimmyT said. Problem is OP says he wants to use a 9s Shimano RD. No go on the chart - pulls 6.03mm

+1. It will work if you use an 8 speed Campy RD.

Did you read the stuff on the link?

The idea of "Shimergo" is that you mix n match incompatible parts and trick them into working with each other.

Sort of like using a 7400 Dura Ace shifter on an Suntour XC Comp Accushift derailleur, on a 5 speed freewheel.

No, it shouldn't work. But it does.

Thanks all. Now, who has an 8 speed, long cage Campy RD they want to offload?

I've got the Campy 8 speed ergo power levers, the matching 8 speed rear dérailleur & planned to use a Shimano 7 speed cassette hub with either a Hyperglide or a Uniglide cassette.

.... I'm assuming it will index OK.
But could the short cage rear dérailleur wrap enough chain to handle a triple or if not a triple crank, maybe a compact double?

I have an either long or medium cage 8spd Mirage RD and the Ergo Brifters that went with it.

Completely off topic, but I saw you have a 1993 Basso Gap. I have a chance to buy a 1993 Basso Gap (Athena). The bike is in excellent shape - well maintained, clean frame with no defects, and all original components. Is $500 a fair price?

Sorry, but I have no idea! It depends on the condition of the frame/paint, what components it's built with, and other factors. I'm really not an expert in modern bikes (and to me 1993 is very modern). Have you posted the question in the c&v appraisals forum?

My Gap is a very nice riding bike, that much I do know.

Thanks, thought I would check since you have one.
