Happy to have lit the fire.

@gugie - got any Nervex lugs we could incorporate?

I do have a few frames hanging on meat hooks...It would be a stretch to upcycle one into a B.O.C., but it's theoretically possible.

Of course, there would be those who would be bothered by modifying a vintage, lugged bike frame, but they just don't get it, now, do they?

;)

BOC has landed!

The box itself definitely needs to be replaced as it's kind of soggy and limp. I haven't unpacked, to see the crap goodness inside but will do so later on. One wrinkle is that sailorbenjamin, the next recipient, hasn't responded to my PM of several days back asking for his address, so perhaps this shoutout will work. Hope so!

Give it another day or two, then try next in line, and I'll rearrange the order. We'll give sailorbenjamin the shadow of a doubt and move him down two slots.

sailorbenjamin 04-16-16 07:52 PM

I'm here. I've been on the road for a couple of days. I'll be home Sunday. The anticipation is killing me. It'd be fun to see something in the box that I put in there all those years ago. Not likely, I know.

gugie 04-16-16 08:11 PM

Thanks for checking in sailorbanjamin.

Order stays the same, I assume nlerner will have an address for sailorbenjamin soon.

Happy birthday, Neal.

Thanks, Tom! Here's what I'm claiming from the BOC:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-9...2/IMG_0277.JPG

I have Ben's address and should be able to get the BOC out to him tomorrow, assuming the Boston Marathon traffic and security doesn't prevent me from getting to the PO! Hmm, maybe I should go to one that's not on the Marathon route.

I'm looking at your haul, and thinking you have a black anodize phase going on...

Spaghetti Legs 04-18-16 05:36 AM

@nierner - if you like history with your parts, that Blaze RD came on a new Trek 1000 I bought in 1990 or 91 in San Francisco. I think the only new road bike I've ever bought. I bought other parts at the same time at the big sale including a 105 RD so that one came off immediately and I'm 90% sure it has close to zero miles on it. The scuffs etc are from 20+ years in the parts box.

mountaindave 04-18-16 07:09 AM

That's some very non-crappy crap and seems to be a trend. Do we need to changethe name to "The Box Of Awesome"?

Oh, there's plenty of crap in there, no doubt about it. Some awesome, too.

In can report that the BOC is now in the hands of the USPS. I transported it there in the C&V way:

I bet you were able to do some sweet front-wheel-stands while in that configuration :)

Happy Belated!

This might be a good time - I could braze a liner "frame" for the BOC internals. I would be willing to do that for the group and the BOC.

Yeah, I know.....I'm a giver like that. :thumb:

I think six pieces of 1/4" plywood, one placed against each side inside the box, would be all that's needed. Anything more rigid than that. In my (what do I know) opinion, probably cause more harm than it would prevent.

Thanks! And front-wheel stands are too elementary: I was going full somersault!

everything about that bike rocks

You know you can count on nlerner to do this with the requisite amount of style. I think he probably wore woolen knickers, wingtips and a tweed cycling cap on his trip to the Post Office.

Not so sure about wingtips, but possibly a sport jacket with leather elbow patches. :D

I actually did recently get a tweed cycling cap from Walz Caps--highly recommended! I'm afraid I'm too much of casual shoe wearer to don wingtips, however. I do have some authentic-looking cycling shoes from William and Lennon in the UK.

Like an old friend waiting for me on the porch when I got home, there was the Box O Crap.
You guys have really turned up the class factor. I'll have to buy a shiny bike if I want to play this game much.

And it all worked out, good communication all around!

Sorry. Just waiting for the negs to come back from the developer.
I couldn't figure out how the bird was bicycle related (nor how she survived the trip) so I took her out to make room for usable parts.

Otherwise, I was pretty conservative about what I took out, the parts in the box are a lot fancier than they used to be and my bikes are still the same old beaters. I managed to get some nice tidbits back in, tough.
