I will say this came together very nicely, and rides very well. Actually, I think it is an absolutely beautiful bike! Like other dumpster finds, it's almost insane that this nearly made it into one. :( But she has been restored and I am keeping her. I should start a club or something called All My Nice/Fast Bikes Have Dents In Them. Or not...

2) For the time being, I will keep the frame as is. MAX tubing is 'biaxially ovalized' and that is certainly true for the top tube. Vertical oval at the head tube, blending to a horizontal oval at the seat tube. Wacky stuff, which I don't think standard frame blocks would work well with. I could always go for the "it's an aero mod" angle... So maybe no frame repair, but the other stuff I'm all for!

Oof! That's a heckuva dent. If you don't care about the looks, it doesn't affect the ride. On the other hand, that dent is right in the middle...perhaps it's round there?

It's such a nice frame, I'm thinking that it could be made just about good as new by:

1. Rolling out the dent as much as possible.
2. Filling the residual dent with JB weld, then sanded smooth.
3. Rattle can painted using a custom mixed paint from an automotive shop. If by chance it's a "paint chip match" the cost for a can would be about $18. If not, I know a place in Portland that you could drop your frame, or maybe just the fork and they'll exact match for about $50. There's probably places in Seattle that will do the same.
4. Let that paint harden up over a while, then use some rubbing compound to lightly blend in the two.

You've got the skills to do this. We've all seen the Paramount restoration.

Up to you whether you want to try it. Atelier Gugie has frame blocks, and if needed, a set of Forstner bits and some scrap hardwood if custom ones are required, assuming the tubing is round around that dent.

I double checked and I think that dent is (astonishingly) at the exact point that it is round. Thank you for your confidence in my skills (and for opening up your place to take in yet another RoS project), but I still think the MO for now is to just leave it. It honestly doesn't bother me, primarily because the dent is integral to the story of how I came into having this frame in the first place. The paint is in great shape, and I think I will leave well enough alone for the time being.

gugie 07-16-17 10:31 AM

And that's a fine philosophy!

Stylish leather and twine top tube patch? As if you're protecting the frame from pull-back bars...

Hahaha. All I know is that if I take it to a bike show with a day for "current custom/hand builders" (like Velo Cirique the last few times in Portland), I am hanging the placard from the dent, perfectly obscuring it. If I'm not around to tell about the dent, then I wouldn't want to show it (needless distraction). But if I am around, then they'll get the story.

The box arrived on my doorstep yesterday, laden with much crap. So much. Here's the obligatory opening picture:

And here's what I selected:

http://i.imgur.com/fH3a9U0l.jpg

The light is going on my wife's commuter, as soon as I can fashion a new clamp for it. She's pretty excited about it. Same for these wheel reflectors.

I had been looking for a longer stem for my Ruegg, and I think this SR Royal might just work - it just needs a new bolt.

http://i.imgur.com/yI6j9wSl.jpg

I think this is rim tape? Never seen any quite like this, but I needed some.

http://i.imgur.com/1JGXCwsl.jpg

And the piece de resistance...

http://i.imgur.com/t0O5T0ll.jpg

Finally, one of our dogs, Nora, decided she wanted her spot back. Time to pack the box up with even more crap than before and send it on to the next contestant. I'll get it mailed out tomorrow after work.

ecnewell, that's handlebar tape from the 70s.

and a lovely shade of bar tape too, I might add. Likely either Schwinn, or Benotto.

ecnewell - It's handlebar tape from my Violet Schwann Le Tour mixte I had for a short while. It's the real deal. Glad you like it.

And I'm thinking that too tube pad/protection would look real sweet on a Marinoni. ;)

Ah, that makes much more sense. It will still go to good use!

Beating heart of treasured crap
To see me again

I'm pretty sure those green straps were once attached to ... wait for it ... the Godzilla Takara. :)

Don't remember seeing them last time around though. Maybe a BOC re-gift? I've done that before, and the straps pictured in post #4 did find their way into our crappy game once upon a time...

ecnewell 07-20-17 07:01 AM

There's one more very tiny item that I grabbed, but I chose not to picture it because there are multiples in the box and I don't want to spoil the fun for future recipients. Props to whoever included them - very creative! - you can probably figure out who you are. I also put one of the pictured items back in the box at the last minute. It's now literally bulging with crap!

Thank RaleighSport for that one. It's been part of the game for some time now.

RaleighSport 07-20-17 10:52 AM

Thanks guys, but still probably the crappiest DPI printing I've done of them. Oh and crapmaster gugie I just started cleansing my bike workshop, please enter me for another go round to spread the crap.

Ah, bailing the water out from the winter storms, you found rusty crap, eh?

Entered, what comes around, goes around.

There's crap in Oregon!

More updates when I've had a chance to unpack the crap.
