1989 KHS Montana Team; lugged frame with Tange Prestige double-butted steel, Deore XT components, 11/28 cassette, Bio-Pace 46/36/26 crankset, Ritchey Vantage wheels.

Have kept all original parts but using Origin8 Pro-Rise All Mountain handlebars and added Shimano EF-65 shift/brake levers (I prefer modern under-bar shifters to top-bar).

Here's mine, just bought it for £50
Its got original parts on it-
Mavic ssc 851 rear mech, suntour arx front one, and shimano 600 friction shifters and Mavic ssc 630 crankset.
Galli super something brakes with Mavic ssc 430 brake levers.
Specialized hubs with double butted ss spokes and Mavic gp4 rims.

nice.. reminds me of my Jamis which is also an 89 with luggest prestige tubing and two tone paint job

My first bi-plane fork!

Picked up a 1984(ish) Stumpjumper Sport XT yesterday.

At 20.5", it's a little too small for me, but the price was too good to pass up and it should work well for my girlfriend (possibly as-is, but probably set up with drop bars).

The only vintage specialized mtb catalog I've seen is from 1985 and it didn't have this model in it. As close as I can tell, this is a Stumpjumper Sport that was sold with an upgraded XT/Deerhead kit. Deerhead shifters, brakes, front derailleur. The crankset is a Tourney XT. The rear derailleur has been replaced with a Deore MT60.













This comes pretty soon after I bought a 1985 Rockhopper a couple weeks ago. It was the first Specialized bike I've owned and I was very impressed by the quality, so I told myself if I saw an old Stumpy come up on craigslist I'd need to grab it. Like I mentioned, the Sport XT is a little small for me, but the 21.5" Rockhopper fits like a glove with the bullmoose bars, so I'll probably keep that set up that way. Someone upgraded the rear derailleur to a deerhead, but other than that and the saddle it appears to be stock.

Not the greatest pictures, but here are a few I snapped of it after a shakedown run on some of the local canyons, I threw the Jandd frame bag on just to carry some stuff:

Okay, got a REAL oddball for you guys. One that will test even the very seasoned vintage mtb nuts. I will be owning this frame when I get back home to Houston. A friend of mine bought the bare frame of this on ebay for a pretty penny, judging by headtube length. Well, it gets to him, and he can't even stand over the frame. Bad for him, but good for me apparently. This is old school early days experimental stuff right here. Like pre canti mounts!? Can ANYone tell me for sure what this is, or if it was really built by VDC? This might very well be the coolest. rarest bike I've ever owned, and to say the least I am stoked. Feast your eyes!,,,,BD

Not super-vintage, but by MB standards it's old...

Here's my Specialized Hardrock--I'm guessing it's about a 1993 or 1994. It was a Craigslist find that was looked as though it lived indoors all its life and wasn't heavily ridden. After a $30 adjustment, a new saddle, a pair of road slicks, and a new rack/panniers, it's become a terrific commuter.

Keep those Kross Plus tires indoors. I have seen them come back into the bike shop after six months, and they're already cracking. AWESOME bike though!,,,,BD

so after at least an hour of battling with getting tires on and off some rims, I'm pleased to report my Trek 8300 Composite is now weighing in at 23.5 lbs.. dropped 2.5 lbs just by swapping the tires! the old ones were low end junk, and the rear even had an extra puncture protection strip.. the rear tire/tube/strip weighed 3 lbs by itself. When I first got the trek it weighed in at 26 lbs which made me a little mad glad so much weight was in the tires, and glad now the bike i over paid for is actually the lightest of my mtbs.. it's almost lighter than my Ironman road bike too actually

I just tried it out with the Continental Sport Contacts from the 95 Diamondback apex i picked up.. they feel ok, though I think this bike and skinny tires just don't mix. I think I may need to try them out with the Kenda k838 tires which I am very familiar with to accurately judge the ride of this bike.. though now that i've been spoiled with Compass tires, putting those on any bike makes me kind of sad speaking of tires, I'm getting tempted to try out the Schwalbe Marathon Supremes which come in a larger size and black sidewall..

I seem to recall CW doing a mountain bike back in the early 80's (when everyone was jumping in). I have never seen one, so I cannot attest to the one you are getting. The dropout work looks consistant with other BMX focused brand's first attempt at MTB's.

Thanks, I was beginning to wonder if anyone even cared enough to answer. My Buddy actually spoke to Voris Dixon himself, who is still alive and well. He doesn't remember building a frame like this. My friend heard from another source though that he has a short memory. So, the more time that passes from the time it was built, the less will be known. The only CW's I found mtb wise were painted, and had normal dropouts, and appeared to be a few years newer. This will be a KEEPER for sure. I imagine I will probably have a hard time finding all the parts to build it up within my budget. Definitely has to be old school high end stuff. TA triple to start I guess. Derailleurs, I have no clue. What would be nice enough to mount on a mountain bike with Campy drops? Probably re-purposed touring parts I guess? Brakes will have to be single pivot BMX calipers?,,,,BD

The fork is long gone, and wasn't original to the frame anyway, according to my friend. I bet it had either a VERY BMX like Unicrown, or a wide double crown originally..

It has no canti mounts though?? The motorcycle handles for sure. Bullmoose bars, yes. The Campy Rally is a work of genius! Nicely done!,,,,BD

Whoops! Maybe MAFAC centrepulls, they have a lot of reach and clearance and where ubiquitous, not sure if I ever a saw a proto-MTB with them.

It probably had drop outs similar to BMX bikes at the time, with tabs similar to the rear ones brazed to the front of the fork blades. I have seen two very early KHS's like this, as well as some early custom builds from others in N.California.

Drum brakes would be the right option on that CW? Something like this:



As far as Deerhead group set goes, too new. Try a Hueret Duopar or Suntour Cyclone. Look close at these two builds. Both pre 83. Remember, Mountech and Deerhead came out in 83. Before that you used what worked best or what you had. Check out Allan Bonds website for components and try looking at the Oldmountainbikes website. Check out the catalogs for the pre 83 Ritchey's to see what Gary and Charlie were using.

Yeeeeeeeah! We special ordered a wheel for a guy who was making a motorized beach cruiser. The hub was a Sturmey Archer, that looked NOS from the 70's. And stop!?! That was the only time I've ever been able to lift the back end of a 40 pound Schwinn HD, while rolling it across the sales floor. It was comparable to mechanical disc brakes. Thanks for the GREAT ideas!,,,,BD

On a side note, I WISH I could afford a set of those Cook Bros. forks.

I do have a set of WIDE cruiser bars with a cross bar, and a double clamp 7/8's. I would just have to find the right stem.,,,,BD

My old 83ish(I think?) Ross Mt Hood. I really wish it had been a little bigger.

Picked this up today. 200gs components, and Blackburn MTN RACK. $25 bucks and it was mine. Thinking about using it as a commuter, and possibly throwing drop bars on it. Nothing special about it, but just what I was looking for when my old rigid mountain bike bit the dust.

Picked it up from my LBS, had been turned in for a trade. Funny thing is, it was sold at the same shop back in 91 as well. Don,t think I will ever turn it in myself.....

Pics as is 'cept the Blackburn rack has been removed. Pedals replaced by the LBS, grips aftermarket as well but on the hunt for a GT/A"ME set. Seat is a leather one with brass rivets that looks just like a GT one. Leaving it on for now, back tire by the PO. Front is the original Richey megabite great shape too. Have a set of WTB slick 1.5 on order per a good review from a fellow BF'er.

This makes my 3rd GT with a 93 Borrego and 92 Outlook frame(hopeless) also in the stable.

Full Shimano Deore DX that functions perfectly.
Some more picsI love the panto that are on these bikes
Tange double butted frame feel like-er then some of my other MTB's
Nice set of rims first set that isn't Araya or Wienmann
Notice the u-brake and the stiffener


Have to find time to clean and lube this up for the riding season. Can't wait til I get the new wheels shod on it.

I have the twinns to both of your bikes, I was going to put the Sport XT decals on my 85 Stumpjumper, it's nice to see one that is so complete without a bunch of upgrades & the only real difference I see between the 84 & 85 are the forks, bars & crankset. My 85 uses a unicrown fork, a SR slingshot stem and a Specialized branded crankset, it has XT Deerhead derailleurs & shifters & XT Brakes & levers. I also have a Rockhopper that I thought was earlier then 85 but it looks just like yours, same color and all. My Rockhopper was missing a few original parts like the bars which I found a NOS pair on Ebay for $20 shipped, my RD wasn't original but I picked up a set of Suntour Mountech derailleurs for it. The original rear wheel was missing but I found another good front wheel with the correct rim & I am going to lace them to a NOS set of Suntour Sealed Bearing bolt on hubs I have which should be period correct. My plans originally were to keep it all stock but I have a NOS MTB @5000 Accushift 6spd setup I was thinking of installing on it just too be different.

Small world! I also have an 85 (Sport, not XT) that looks and sounds just like yours AND I also had an 83 that looked a lot like that Rockhopper although the components were of an older vintage (TA cranks, motorcycle levers, etc). It was fun to look at but I realized I'm not a collector so I passed it on to someone who was.
