Thank you for the kind words guys. I really like the bike, hopefully it will come out looking great!

I used the catalog on Sheldon's site to know what the components should be when I went to see the bike (1 hour drive each way!!), that's how I'm pretty sure everything is original. I'm the third owner of the bike, the first being the owner of a bike shop here in Florida.

Mr Winthrop, thanks for all the tips. One question though, the saddle is a Bernard Hinault edition which I believe is suede, can I still apply your shoe polish method? That would be great, since the saddle is the one thing on the bike that looks rough and I would hate to replace it.

Thanks!

Andres

PM me regarding a leather BH Turbo (non-suede)

I have got to get some of those shorts. (not the ones on the dude)

Geez Rob, where are your priorities? Or do you already ride
a "tiger skin" saddle?

Now that you mention it, I need one of those, too.
In fact, two sets of the bar wrap, two saddles, and a pair of those britches. Oh yeah.

Heh, heh. They're my age, too. Even now.

Guess I'm outta luck. Submarine Sailors are good for short sprints, but anything over a few yards and we run out of legs and lungs, lol.

We do support Team Tomahawk though.

Hi Rob,
.
I Googled Twigg and Burgland last night. WoW! You would not
believe their Olympic & pro racing records. And Twigg was
not only a super athlete, but brilliant as well. She was 14
when she entered U. Washington as a freshman.

Out of this old soldier's league, Rob. But you're younger and
an ex-Marine so maybe you could catch up with one of those
ladies (if she was riding without pedals). :-)

Nice to know that such super stars once rode for the
Centurion team. Now if we could only figure out what their
Centurion team bikes were like...

I like a challenge....

1985 Centurion Prestige. Motivation to collect one from A.Winthrop
Frame from royleroy, Tange Prestige chro-mo w/chrome dropouts, fork ends, fork crown.
DA headset is the only original component left.
Bars from JunkYardBike, stem from geekrunner's 1986 Ironman
Saddle was linked by a BF member to Cervelo take-offs for $30. Lightest plywood I've ridden.
Seat post from a Lemans
Tires from cudak888, we traded some stuff and he tossed 'em in. I owe him.
Cables were from a WTB/Trade deal. USAZorro, I think. I get confused.
The Shimano 600 tricolor group is from a 52cm 89 Ironman Master $100 on CL, heads up by mrmw.
Only "discrepancy" is the Matrix Aurora front rim, still laced to the 600 tricolor hub, though.
Specs: http://velospace.org/node/16608

It's lighter than the same size Ironman, or feels so, anyway. I sold a Lemans to a BF member for his brother, and a group to another BF member, and that pretty much paid for the bike. I've yet to put the 120psi in the tires and really go at it, but Friday's supposed to be a nice day....:)

Hey, that's my backyard. Glad you're putting it to good use. It looks great.

Nice grass. Thanks for the frame. It rides very nicely.
I'm thinking of taking it out for 20 Friday.

RobbieTunes 01-08-09 05:39 PM

Miscalculated the 140mm stem, and it's too long. Went back into the box labeled "Prestige" and found a NOS 3TTT 120mm stem and NOS Modolo bars, likely what I intended for the bike and simply forgot. Old age has its side effects. The stem/bar swap should be done tonight. The bike will be just as pretty without Cinelli.

The Turbo is ready to build, with a set of Araya CTL-370 Superhards on 600 hubs. However, a clandestine operation is under way, to determine the scope and quality of the chrome under that paint. An example has been found that has been stripped and is being ridden, the owner apparently blissfully unaware that a close inspection of her bike may lead Turbo owners to bare their own forks and stays. Stay tuned.

1986 Ironman is up next.

I know most of you Centurion fans are subscribed to this thread, so I thought I'd let you know I posted a bunch of pics of the Turbo shown here a few posts back.
I didn't feel right posting that many pics on this thread, so I opened a new one..hope that's OK. The thread can be found here: http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...39#post8151239.
Enjoy!

ascayola 01-09-09 01:32 PM

Yep, I did try the Kiwi on the saddle. Those are actually the "after" pictures, if you compare the tip of the saddle with the pic on this thread you'll see that the improvement was great. I was thinking of changing the saddle before I tried your method, but it's a keeper now!
I can't remember what the pedals are now, but I'm pretty sure I checked and they were whatever was original to the bike.

Here's My '84 Turbo

Some photos of a work in progress. This one came with that truly UGLY Dimension stem and Suntour Cyclone II ders, minus the the orginal Turbo saddle and a set of mismatched tires. I just had to remove the Suntour dt shifters and install the barcons and just happened to have a package of Benotto Cello tape in Silver. I also installed a set of Superbe ders and replaced a set of nasty little clip-ins with some new MKS Touring pedals.

What I'll be looking for over the next few months will be: an appropriate stem, a Turbo saddle, and some nicer hoods for the Gran Compe levers.

The pressure is on, Robbie.

RobbieTunes 01-12-09 05:59 AM

youse guys. it's coming. all the parts are here with cables/housing enroute.

(pics in process)

ascayola 01-12-09 10:27 AM

That's one shiny frame. I kinda like the red/silver better than my red/gold combination.
Yours and skidoo's have a different logo than mine and Epicerik's, they obviously changed that somewhere between 82 and 84 but does anyone know more precisely when? It could be helpful to date bikes by their pictures on ebay/cl.

I won this bike at 7 am the day after Thanksgiving on ebay. Thanks to Robbie Tunes for the advice. I already have a 1988 Purple Fade Master that is in the process of a complete rebuild. This bike was in great condition and setup for Triathlon racing which I got interested in because of the bikes.

That is a classic 1989 tri bike. Aren't you glad Ken had two of them?
Let me know when the 88 is done, we'll submit pics...

just a mod

thought i would show what i did to my centurion lemans. why? cuz i can. i like the mod better cuz i don't have to feel like a pretzel while riding. right now i've got the 250mm stem at the limit. i might lower it a bit after a few trials. just had to much weight on my arms. maybe as i get more in shape this january through december i'll have less weight on my arms and lowering the stem won't be a bad thing. for now though it is comfortable. that's my centurion sport dlx in the other picture.

The older I get, the more comfortable that position looks. The appeal of that bike, to me, is it says "I'm ridden" all over it. It's a working bike, with purpose and intent. I wax poetic.

Hi, Hoping someone will know what year model this Centurion is from. See link below for the pics.

http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=504096

I recently stumbled across an old bike frame lying against the fence in a carpark at Lidcombe.

I drove past it and decided to turn back and pick it up.

Glade I did because from what information I can find on it, it appears to be a Japanese made Centurion "All Purpose Bike" from the stickers.

I had a quick look online but can't find too much on these bikes.

Can anyone tell me some more about this frame?

Frame number is L4*51133, can't make out the 3rd digit. See picture attached.

I've begun stripping the forks off it and will take the bottom bracket off when I get some tools tomorrow. I've only ever restored a BMX or two back in my teens so I'll see how it turns out.

I've a got a few ideas on the finished product, just going to price it up and see how it stacks up. Can't spend a fortune because I've got other projects on the back burner that need to be finished off. This has just popped up which is a welcome distraction.

Thanks in advance.
