Well, couple weeks ago I spotted a red 10sp bike sitting all alone in the back lot of the local Thrift store. So I go have a look. It is a Raleigh-built Univega, some of the components are even Raleigh badged (brakes, axle nuts, seatpost binder bolt, etc.). Otherwise, the bike just seems to be out there acquiring rust under that tree. So I ask at the store what about that bike, but the person in charge of the "back lot" is off that day, so I decide to come back another day. The bike does not look like it is going anywhere fast. So today I finally get back there. But, while driving back to the Univega tree, I spot a pile of bikes in back of the store that had not been there before. I can see the tell-tale drop-bars that indicate possible good things, so I stop to have a look. First thing I see is a large blue bike, a Motobecane, but rats, not lugged!! Looks like one of those cheap welded frames, hate those things. But I take a closer looks, and low and behold, there is a frame sticker with that cute little Columbus bird on it. What the hey? The sticker says "Columbus Inexternal". Hmmm,,,never heard of it, but the bike is really light despite being 62 cm or more. Most parts are french, cool Nervar crank, looks like a keeper! It is a Motobecane Jubilee Sport model. Then I spot another bike at the back of the pile. At least this one has a lugged frame for starts,,,it is a Panasonic DX-4000. Hmmm, never was much of a Japanese bike fan, but decided to take a look. The components were cool, Shimano 600 "Arabesque" deraillers, cranks, stem, and Araya 27 X 1 1/4 rims. Champion #2 butted tubes, forks and stays,,,looked like a keeper too! While checking out the bikes a guy from the store walks over and starts to tell me what a great frame that Motobecane has. So I am thinking "rats, they probably want a bunch for these". But the guy is apparently not the one who decides prices, that is someone else, so he goes to get them. He returns with a young lady who, when I ask her how much for the Moto, says, "well, would you be willing to give $35 for it?" I tell her, that seems ok, and then I ask her how much for the Moto and the Panasonic? She says, well, how about $60 for both? And I say I am in! So, point of story, got 2 bikes but the poor Univega continues to waste away under its tree, and sometimes it is lucky when the guy in charge of the "back lot" is gone for the day! Maybe I will feel sorry for the lonely Univega and return another day, unless there is a new pile of bikes in the way!! Also, if anyone knows anymore about these particular bikes I would appreciate knowing it, such as quality, age, etc. The Moto is too big for me, so I will probably end up selling it. May sell off the Panasonic too, but for now will expend my energy cleaning them up. The good news is that the paint and chrome on both bikes are in really nice condition, the chrome is almost perfect!!

Next-door neighbor moving out gave me a Centurion LeMans just a few minutes ago.
This thing is dripping with eighties' chic. Should look nice cleaned up.

Anybody know a date range?
It has Exage sport & Biopace on it.

Very nice bikes, you did well. I like the old Volvo wagon too...reminds me of my '66. And my '65 4 door. And my '67 2 door.

Happy New Year to you too!

T-Mar identified my LeMans as a 1989 model. It has the same Exage Sport group as yours. That should make yours an '88. Very nice bike and I love the eighties chic!

I can't believe you paid so much for that junk. Next time you're in Virginia you need to drop them off with me for disposal. [BF member with no cool thrift shops or junk yards to pick over].

If the components are original, which I imagine they are, Shimano date codes on Vintage-Trek!

As a child of the 80s, I can dig the paint scheme, though it pains me to think we used to dress like that too.

The '88 guess sounds a little off - the crown forks make it seem older than that. My guess would be 86 or 85.

Of course, I could be wrong about the year....the date should be easy enough to approximate from the serial number. You certainly didn't get the loudest paint scheme they produced, and for free it's a great bike.

Ahh, didn't know about that ^.
According to the date codes, the Exage components are from Oct/Nov 1987.
Thanks for the help, guys!

I haven't posted in this thread in a while.. I couldn't resist this one:
Schwinn Letour with campy front and rear derailleurs:

Worth the BIN of $95 for this little trinket alone..

any info on where this one was built (Giant or China Bicycles?) would be appreciated.

I have determined that THIS is the best weekend to check out the thrift stores such as good will and other charity-type places due to the fact that EVERYONE is bringing stuff in to meet the tax year 2006 donations deadline. I swear, one place I went to yesterday had a line of cars out into the street and 2 lanes were needed in front of the drop-off doors. I am heading out right now to see whats new since yesterday! (Cross-posted from ebay/craiglist finds threads)

OK - 1st post of the new year!!

Here's a catch I had a while back, a nice $10 Schwinn Le Tour. I finally got a chance to clean it up, and it came out very nice. The original rear wheel had a bent axle, so I swapped it out with another wheel and converted it to a 12 speed while I was at it. I also removed the dork disk...mo' betta....

Take a look...

After:

Happy New Year!!!!!

Who snagged the "new LeJeune champagne road bike" that was on SF Bay area Craigslist? Saw it on site search and posting is already deleted. Share some pics, please?

Grabbed these from a guy in a neighboring town this afternoon. Up first we have what appears to be a 1985 Cannondale SR500 with Suntour Cyclone and Superbe Pro and a Royal Gran Compe brakeset. The other is a 1982-ish Austro-Daimler Alpina (with a Puch headbadge) that someone built with a full 105 group. Of course I'll keep the 105 parts and build it back to stock since I have most of the correct parts in the garage already. I don't think that's too bad for a total of $80.
