And now for something a little different.....
No STI'S, no Ergo's, but upgrade, yes.
1985 Raleigh Racing USA Series Grand Prix, on of two owned by cehowardGS. His other one is white-accented, this is not.
DA 7900 shifters, Suntour GPX FD, 105 RD, a mix. He may swap out wheels for something similar, but that's his choice.

Was going to wait till I've finished the bike completely but I've been riding it and couldn't wait. Got this frame with cranks, brakes and levers (levers damaged hard in a crash) for $30, no other components or wheels, it was clearly made into a fixed gear (cranks had a single speed chainring on them and it was covered in stickers) and crashed hard. Traded parts with a friend and ended up with headset and threadless carbon fork for another $30. I had all the other parts in my bin so I'm not really that deep in the bike, but it's my favorite now. Weight feels about 20lb, will go lower with tweaking.

I already posted this in it's own thread but I thought I would add a picture to this thread as well since it's the definitive list of Retro Roadies;
Here is my 1986 Gazelle Champion Mondial 753 frame with Shimano 5700 105 10 speed setup with a compact double crankset. The wheels are Mavic Aksium Race, seat is by Specialized, stem by Coda but will be replaced when I can find a nice black Cinelli XA. I'm already not liking the Bontrager ergo bars I used. I have a set of Cinelli 64-40 bars I'm thinking about swapping in their place. The frame has beautiful long point lugs and wrap around seatstays. I've wanted to build out a set of Reynolds 531, 653 and 753 bikes with similar wheels and group sets for a while now so I could compare each tubeset. This bike kicks off that project.

Nice Super Sport! Actually I have a red & black SS being shipped to my house as we speak (supposedly in pristine condition)! It was a bit pricier than yours. It may even change my plans... I planned on picking 2 bikes to do a retro upgrade this winter, one for a good all around road setup and the other for road/tri. My Prologue was going to be the tri upgrade, and all the new components would be black (it is a red & white frame). But now I am wondering if I should instead do the SS since it is red & black. I've got just about everything ready in black... crankset (and chainring), quill stem, seatpost, tt bar and levers, etc. Still need some good black brakes and I don't even know if there is a high quality black headset available. Just not sure if the SS or the Prologue would better fit with black components, or from another perspective which one to leave all original (the Prologue does need a new rim at the minimum). The road build on the Tempo (metal flake blue and white) I'll keep all the components polished and purposely remove black in exchange for white where possible (hoods, cables).
Techno-Glide Threaded Headsets ? Interloc Racing Design / IRD
I've got the threadless version on my smoothie. Machined cups, sealed stainless cartriges, Extremely smooth. Mine is the zinc plated chrome finish, and it looks great on an otherwise black bike. It comes in several colors including black, in 1 1/8, 1 threadless, and 1 threaded.

Thanks! I just finished riding it, come to find out I set a ton of PRs and got a KOM with it. Definitely a keeper.

After thinking about my upgrade question with black components, debating either the red and white Prologue or red and black SS, I think I am going to stick with my original idea of the Prologue. Besides I think it is perhaps designed more for speed, but not 100% sure (mine is the road model). But several of my component upgrades also have white on them, so I think it will be a better scheme with the red & white Prologue. Now the question remains if I upgrade all the components to mostly black on the Prologue, I could probably get either a black headset or perhaps white since that is offered too, and the head tube is white. However if the white is off a bit then maybe it will look bad.
Photo of my bike for reference (still has all the shiny parts, but you get the idea...)
So white or black headset? The stem and handlebars, etc will be black (but probably white wrap).

Not too close, Im in Dayton area, close to Wright Patterson AFB. I was in Newark last week to get a frame fixed though. Lots more elevation, really beautiful country east of Columbus. I really need to get out that way for some riding.
I like contrasting parts to the frame color on steel frames. For a period correct look silver is always classy, but when that's out the window its nice to break up the color scheme. I guess Id go with black, but the red would really pop between the black and white, given the red throughout the bike.

Reynolds 753 and those wrap-arounds are mega yummy!

Thanks on the kudos, I'm surprised no one else commented on the bike being made from 753. It took me over a year to find a 753 frame to build, you just don't see them often. The lug set was the clincher on buying this frame because it was a rusty nightmare when I first saw it => why I did the full repaint.

The crank is an '80s Specialized Touring Triple, cold-forged by Sugino. It's a 110/74bcd crank, without built-in spacers for the 74bcd granny ring, so only using two 110bcd rings is easy. Currently a 34/46t compact double---I'm using compact doubles on just about everything these days.
The rack/bag is a Berthoud 604 bag on the dedicated Berthoud rack. Berthoud has two bags, the bigger 604 and smaller 704, that strap onto the rack. The rack attaches to the seatpost with, essentially, a threadless stem, which is included with the rack. It's a pretty cool system---the bag/rack combo doesn't sway or rattle, the bag sits closer to the wheel (with the stem upside-down) and farther back from the saddle than your standard Carradice transverse bag, and it's easier to mount/remove than a rear rack. Especially useful on bikes w/o rack attachments. The upside-down GB logo isn't particularly elegant, but it works better for me upside-down and I'd rather not nuke the logo.
Like most Berthoud stuff, it's pretty darn pricey, but I got mine used and much cheaper than retail. You don't see used ones pop up for sale very often, but when they do pricing is usually pretty cheap.
Here's Wallbike's pages on 'em:
Berthoud Rack Saddlebags GB604/704 | wallbike.com
Berthoud Rack for GB604/704 rear rack bags | wallbike.com
753 frames are kinda thin on the ground. The respray looks great---who did it?

Really sweet! I'll own a Bruce Gordon one day. What is the crankset you're running? Is it a compact double? Lets hear about that rear rack too!

Hello everyone!
I stumbled upon this forum looking for some Ferraroli frames. Since I put my hand on a Simpatico frame, I tried to see how others reconditioned these frames. Unfortunately it isn't a frame easy to find.
I tried to keep the original paint.
I bought some new wheels, and a Campagnolo Centaur groupset. At first I wanted to go with a Ultegra 6800 groupset, but the charisma of a Campagnolo groupset wouldn't let me buy the Ultegra.

I'm building a new bike, and have a few months before the frame will be built and delivered. I'm going with the brifter set up with it, but in the mean time, would there be any problem with using my new built wheel set on my old bike? It will be a Shimano 10/11 gear hub. All I can think of is that the older derailleur won't be able to reach the shorter and taller gears due to it not having the range. I don't think there will be fitting issues, will there?

The "old Bike" how old , What kind of bike is it?
As far as physical wheels fitting there are two issues please touch on these items
1. Size the frame was built for 700c or 27" or?
2. Hub width: Older bikes had narrower hubs than newer bikes.
As for Deraileurs, Yes depends on the gearing
1. Triple/ Double Crank
2. Cassette Cluster Range (usually the big side is the issue )
3. Shifters How many speeds is the old bike?
4. Chain, depends if you are going to run the 10 Speed cassette (they are narrower and can cause issues with 9speed and lower.

Thank you. The wheels are Vuelta corsa superlite, they seemed to be the best bet in my budget and are working great for me. I can't say I expect them to hold up as long as a more expensive pair, but we'll see.

yeah I'm new to this, picked out the tubes myself instead of asking for help... they seemed huge when I installed them, now I just hope people don't notice...not working I guess.
