I was considering putting brifters on my bike, and found this thread. Thought I'd contribute my ride. It's not as blingin' as some of these rides on here. No STI shifters yet, but it has a fully modern-ish 9 speed Ultegra/105 group and matching 9 speed indexing Dura-ace downtube shifters. I think it kinda qualifies.

The frame is an 83 or 84 Super Sport Schwinn made of Tange 2. It rides super smooth.

Count me in the small minority of people who prefer down tube index shifters to brifters. I've got two bikes with them - my newly acquired De Rosa has Campy 9 speed downtube shifters, which I was thrilled to find - and my Paramount Series 7 that I built to my own spec has those same Shimano 9 speed downtube shifters as the bike in the post above. I find that when I ride with brifters, I get numbness issues from not changing my hand positions often enough, and I don't experience that with downtube shifters - either friction or indexing.

+2

Works for me.

I dig both, but the simplicity of the DT shifters wins by a nose.

Thanks There Nitto M106 bars. The tops are flat so you'd need an opening clamp stem also.

I'm trying to decide which rims to buy for my retro roadie. Going with a polished silver groupset (Athena 11-speed). Fast race-style bike (no big commuter tires). Will use 23mm tires.

TB14 seem beautiful and have the wider-is-better aspect but are a bit "beefy". Velocity Fusion come in polished silver...lighter but not traditional width. Mavic Open Pro are an option if I remove the hideous stickers. Pacenti PL23's are all sold out. Anything else to consider?

That's a pretty good price for 105-level wheels with new rims.

I wish they made the silver Archetype rim in the 20 and 24 drillings like they do for the black ones.

Man I've struggled with this very issue. Sweet black rims seem like a dime-a-dozen (check out the NOS Ambrosios on eBay) but a classic high-polish box rim is hard to come by. I looked at the TB14 and also thought it looked too bulky in silver. Haven't seen one in person though.

So, I've gone back to buying vintage rims, polishing the rims and hubs and lacing with new spokes and nipples. You would need a newer-style hub of course but I'll take the end result over a TB14 any day!

Before I learned how to build wheels, I had Sugar Wheel Works build me a set of high polish silver Archetypes with Suzue Road Classica hubs (these wheels are light and lively, as well as hot sexy!). Anyway they said that the lettering can be removed but it will leave a "shadowing" of where it was.

Too much! About 215 lbs. But any modern rim seems to do OK under my butt. I put a 1000 miles on a set of A23s no problem.

Then Fulcrum 5 CXs would work just fine.

I have two sets that I ride off road and they have held up really well.

Look nice once you get all of the decals off them.

How do you de-decal them? I was in this same predicament with the two bikes I'm doing a retro roadie redo to. Ended up buying used rim for one, and Fulcrum Quattros for the other - I gave in on that one with all the black stuff. Actually want to use that bike for a bit of racing so a little bit of carbon fiber and black parts allowed me to get better/lighter/aero stuff for cheap (relatively). Still those Fulcrums have some pretty bold decaling. Might fit in with the red/white/black look of the build, will see when its done. But probably would like to remove them if I can do it effectively.

Blow dryer and your favorite Steve Earle album.

Mildest setting of course.

Just get them warm, grab a corner with a finger nail and slowly pull towards you.

Take your time and don't get them too hot.

If you do the glue will stick to the rim and you'll end up with your can of goof off.

They look great when you are finished and they are one tough wheel set.

I'm down 30 pounds from this summer, but I rode them constantly at that higher weight with zero issues.

Haven't posted in a while, but here's a late addition: 1989 Paramount. A tad heavier than the 770, but it could a product of having 105 and not DA. Rides nice!
Parts breakdown for those interested (but perhaps not necessary since everything is heavily branded anyway?):

Frame/Fork: Schwinn Paramount, 1989
Drivetrain, brakes, shifters: Shimano 5800
Pedals: Shimano R540
Stem: Zenith/Dia Compe 26.0
Handlebars: Soma Hwy One
Headset: Tange Levin
Wheels: Rim: H Plus Son Archetype 20/24 / Hub: Bike Hub Store SLF71W, SL210 / Spokes: Sapim Laser / Quick Release: Shimano 5800 / Tire: Continental GP4000s
Saddle: Fizik Arione R3 Kium
Seatpost: Thompson Elite
Garmin handlebar mount: Origin8
Bottle cage: Lezyne Power Cage

I don't generally find black bikes to be particularly attractive, but that Paramount is the exception to the rule, by a large margin.

Love the Paramount. I've seen those rims used in so many wrong applications, it's great to see them where they work perfectly with the bike. Well done!
