Cross-posted in C&V like there's no tomorrow, once again I present Mrs. ascherer's '75 Grand Jubile Mixte sporting a 2x9 setup. I found this bike in near-original state almost two years ago, and she rode it last season. She loved the ride quality and fit but wanted modern shifting. I wanted her to have brakes that didn't require quite so much hand strength. Now it's got a compact VO crankset, long-reach Tektros, Tiagra RD and shifters, I think there's a Microshift up front, I forgot, dynamo lighting and MKS Sylvan pedals. I did the work over the winter but thanks to rotator cuff work she he rode it for the first time this weekend and it passed muster. I'm very happy with the performance and the aesthetics. I think it got modernized without sacrificing elegance. |
Fillet brazed Columbus MS mystery project. Apparently likely built by Francis Quillon, and might be a Geliano (French).
Ride is fantastic- smooth and fast. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...cb8d8140f9.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...68b91cb765.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...086538f2b8.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...7e2908e533.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...c998e545c0.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...51b5c5711c.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...20ddda3f54.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...d470f1b216.jpg As purchased with cracked seatpost, bent derailer, irreparably gummed up tricolor STI, Lemond style Scott bars and badly cut steerer. The fork is Krapf, not the original, but stamped with the columbus dove. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...e7c858a95e.jpg |

This is perhaps the least rowdy paint scheme of any of my bikes, and Denti is a lesser known brand, but beneath the one color Azzurri blue paint, the frame has a number of nice details. Frame is made from Columbus SL, main tubes are Gilco and teardrop shape. It has fast back seat stays, and the seat stays themselves are like Popeye's forearms that bulge noticeably in the middle before tapering at each end. Fork crown and frame has a number of engraved ladybirds, the company logo, and some neat spear point lugs, through which the rear brake cable enters and exits as it routes through the top tube, which I've not seen before.
Built up with 10 speed Campag, semi compact 52/36 chainset, 28c tyres and chunky 3mm bar tape it makes for a really comfortable all day ride. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...6afcae21bf.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...4e1fbdd28a.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...82edf7ba7e.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...83c5e2a284.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...4034fb3055.jpg And as all my roadies run 10 speed Campag I borrowed the Zipp's from my Look to see what it looks like with some deeper rims, and it rocks the look pretty well:) https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...f9a90f468c.jpg |

1987 Bianchi Brava rescued from a friend's garage. She was the original owner. It was originally going to be a build for my wife. It turned out to be too big for her, but the perfect size for me! 😁
Frame and forks were powder-coated to as close to Celeste as I could get. Kept the original seatpost, headset and cranks. New components: Shimano R7000 (105) shifters and brakes. GRX RX-812 RD Deore XT 11-42 cassette Wolf Tooth 44T chainring Nitto Technomic stem and M186STI bars Shimano RS-300 wheels Brooks B17 saddle https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...7bab0e99d.jpeg |
Still have a few bits that need to be sorted out (fork steerer tube needs to be cut, need some 1.125" spacers so it doesn't look like a pencil neck geek, and something else that I forget), and it's a crappy picture, but I wanted to share where I am on this project. To paraphrase John's Vintage Bike Garage, it's a Chitalian - in this case an Italian frame & Chinese Sensah Empire group.

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...9558821c3.jpeg The frame’s not old by the standards of this place but has had its 21st and destined to be a classic according to my opinion. 2002-ish Merlin Extralight with Aussie-built Kenevans Max fork and 2015 Chorus 11-speed. |
here's Wizard s/n 13, purchased in 1998 for 600 bucks, repainted by Brian Baylis, and equipped with Campy Chorus indexed shifting. I rode this bike for 20 years and sold the frame for 5x what I paid for it. don't think I ever had a bad ride on this bike ! it it was beautiful

My father-in-law up in the Sierra Nevadas used to race Bud Light Series triathlons back in the 80's. He'd beat the top contenders out of the water and he still remembers the whoosh sound of getting passed on the bike.
His 90s steel OS tubing Paramount (royal purple--64cm) was collecting dust so I convinced him to let me build it up with STIs to get him to ride it again. Originally it came with tri-color Shimano 53/44 x 13-23. He claims that he pushed his old racing Univega over the mountains with a 19t gear. I put a 12-34 rear cassette and Sensah 2x7 shifter/levers. I wrapped the bars with purple Deda Elementi tape and put on purple anodized end crimps. We did half of the old tri course around the lake and he held a good pace over the hills at the end. I haven't reached my 10-post minimum so the photos will have to wait. |

Picked up this iconic frame for next to nothing as it had a small dent and the paint was in bad shape. Ended up repainting the frame and updating. I love the results! The only things that are original are the head tube badge and the seat post cinching bolt.
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...d7c008892.jpeg What are those handlebars? They look very comfortable! |

Santa Maria? It's a shame I'm not still down in Los Olivos. Enjoy Tepusquet Canyon for me; it was one of my favorite climbs in the area. I have a early 90's Paramount OS, but it's the candy-apple red!
