Got a good steel Trek at my favorite thrift store tonight. 1980 Trek 412, with an XL 25 1/2 inch frame size. Pretty good shape overall for a thrift store bike. Typical Hooterville thrift store price. Interesting timing given our recent debate over the value of a Trek 400 in the appraisal section.

Hi Bill - I've decided that I was egregiously wrong about the value of old steel Treks - only worth $15, but I'll give you $50. ;)
PS Did you date that thing yet? Does it have the Gyromaster sealed hubs? Really looks nice too. Great score! +1 Same model, same color, different size than the one posted a half page earlier..... Yes, I think you are right, these are worth a lot more than I thought. LOL.... |

Here's one my brother found in the shed of his new home. I haven't seen it yet but he's asked me to give it a tune up for him. It's a Raleigh but that's all I know.http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=180463
The handlebars look pretty odd to me. |
Picked up two Ross bikes today on the way home. Asking $20, offered $15 and in hindsight could have paid $10.
3 speed cruiser in need of tires but in good shape and a road bike with so so paint and a double butted hi-tensile steel frame. Oh, and the road bike has a nice Shimano 600 arabesque group with a triple crank. No pictures yet, but felt like posting since it has been awhile since I picked up anything worth posting. |

Yeah post a pic and if you decide to part let me know I might be interested in the 600 parts. $20 and shipping cover it? LOL |

Not much of a catch, but priced accordingly... I'm hoping to get some help from some of you on identifying a couple of items. I got this box of parts with what you see here(along with the charger and another battery pack for the light, and a MTB fender).
I dont even know if this is bike related, but the small black Heatflash(looks like a remote). What is it? There is a flat probe that slides out of it and heats up when you push the button, and a red led comes on. There is a light blue aero vinyl patch kit for some sort of tubular? I can post more detailed photos if needed http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/f...t/IMG_3862.jpg |
Another fruitful Saturday at the Goodwill. 50% off, so I picked up this Jazz Vertical by Trek. I learned what a Jazz was thanks to C&V and knew I had something on Friday. Returned this morning to find it still available. Not bad for $12.47, only a broken brake lever. It's Tange MTB (yellow label) tubing, and Shimano Exage 300 LX group. I think it's circa 90-92. Should make a nice flip. ;)

I would have nabbed that Jazz just based on that beautiful paint job! Well done!

ya it definitely looked like a single speed setup. what i'm curious about though is how well a biopace chainring would work on single speed/fixed. would there be a problem with chain tension? maybe thats why it got abandoned. Anyone know where I can find a 7 speed cassette?

Not free, but I picked up a 1972 Schwinn Super Sport in Lime green for $50 this weekend. Rides like a dream when I replaced the wheelset. I was planning on replacing the hugely heavy single piece cranks, but I'm rethinking that. A) there's something important about history and B) there's a neat flywheel effect when you get that much weight spinning. and finally C) I'm a Clydesdale anyway, it would be far easier to just loose 5 lbs off my midsection.
Thank God the bike needs a repaint, cause this color is seriously ugly, but if you haven't had the pleasure of riding one of these old fillet braized Schwinns you've missed something. Seriously sweet ride. |

Interesting "trash" from the LBS. A few NOS bits, nothing special but kind of cool. The NOS centerpull brake is a lot cooler than the NOS turkey levers!
I'm not sure how good the derailleur cables will be but I'll give them a try. http://i733.photobucket.com/albums/w...a/IMG_0647.jpg http://i733.photobucket.com/albums/w...a/IMG_0648.jpg |

It's a 89 CRX Si, has 85k miles on the clock. I need to reinstall the interior and do a bit of bodywork. It was a Catch of the Day 12 years ago at $800. |
My winter project
Found this at the dump this morning. First decent bike left there for some time. Will probably fix it up and sell it on Craigslist or maybe just keep it. Fuji Monterey (late '70s, early 80s?)
Still have to do some research on it. http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/m...iMonterrey.jpg Has Suntour deraileur, diacompe brakes. Free wheel seems okay so far. http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/m...reySuntour.jpg Has valite tubing, whatever that is. http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/m...dTubeBadge.jpg |

Looks like the shorter twin to mine:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2...Monterey_1.jpg Mine however was not found at the dump, you might like it, either way it's worth saving. |
I have a bike that I'm running as a single speed with a biopace ring - figure that the ring is shaped funny, right, but when the egg is horizontal, it's longer, and when it's vertical, it's wider, taking up as much chain at any given time. No need for a tensioner, even.

picked up a schwinn sprint that the guy was going to take to the dump if it didn't sell on craigslist I now have the bike and will be converting it to a touring bike this winter to take on week long trips next summer. I had one as a teenager and can testify to the strength of the frame the running gear is another story and will be replaced.http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=181234http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=181235

Just picked this up the other day at the Salvation Army. Not sure of the year, but I'm guessing 93 or 94. Diamondback Venture equipped with Exage 400 LX components and BioPace crank. It's not real high end, but is in very good shape and has cool pearl white paint.

Cool Diamondback, I had the same model a while ago, it cleaned up nice and was a pretty sweet riding bike. I think these early DB's were built by Centurion. Good find, should be a good flip if that's what you intend to do.
|
I thought it was cool. I've never seen any around this area. It's too small for me so I think I'll clean, tune and flip it. I would love to add it to the stable, but I'd rather see someone enjoy riding it. It does have this on the left chainstay and it has Centurion bars also.

I have to ask how you fellas who go to the dump get your bikes! Aren't there rules against taking things from the dump? Or do you go, muck about until you stumble onto something worth taking?
I really want to go to the dump as almost any bike I find there is better than my current bike less situation, and after I'm done with it I would gladly turn it over to someone who then needs it more than me just go get someone else into biking. |
